T. Glynne Davies
Thomas Glynne Davies (12 January 1926 – 10 April 1988), usually known as T. Glynne Davies, was a Welsh poet, novelist and television and radio broadcaster. Davies was born in Llanrwst, Wales. Career Davies was crowned as a bardd in the 1951 National Eisteddfod in Llanrwst for composing the winning poem ''Adfeilion'' ("Ruins"). His other literary output includes the elegy ''Hedydd yn yr Haul'' ("Skylark in the sun") (1969) and the epic novel ''Marged'' (1974). During World War II, Davies worked at a colliery in Oakdale near Caerphilly, as a Bevin Boy. Davies worked as a news reporter for BBC Radio from 1957 and presented the popular Welsh language radio programme ''Bore Da'' ("Good morning") from 1970 to 1976. Welsh Language
Welsh ( or ) is a Celtic languages, Celtic language of the Brittonic languages, Brittonic subgroup that is native to the Welsh people. Welsh is spoken natively in Wales by about 18% of the population, by some in England, and in (the Welsh colony in Chubut Province, Argentina). Gareth Glyn
Gareth Glyn, born Gareth Glynne Davies (born 1951), is a Welsh composer and radio broadcaster. Life and education Born in Machynlleth, Wales, Glyn is the eldest son of the late Welsh poet T. Glynne Davies. He received his secondary education at Ysgol Maes Garmon in Mold, before attending Merton College, University of Oxford, 1969–72, studying music and specialising in composition. Compositions He has composed a wide range of musical pieces, including diverse vocal and orchestral work and music for television. He has produced one symphony, and many of his recorded orchestral works are in the light music genre, including ''A Snowdon Overture'', ''Legend of the Lake'' and ''Anglesey Seascapes''. Bevin Boys were young British men Civil conscription, conscripted to work in coal mines between December 1943 and March 1948, to increase the rate of coal production, which had declined through the early years of World War II. The programme was named after Ernest Bevin, the Labour Party (UK), Labour Party politician who was Minister of Labour and National Service in the wartime coalition government. Chosen by lot as 10% of all male Conscription in the United Kingdom, conscripts aged 18–25 (plus some volunteering as an alternative to military conscription) nearly 48,000 Bevin Boys performed vital and dangerous civil conscription service in coal mines. Ar Log
Ar Log (Welsh for "for hire") are a Welsh folk band. They have performed since the 1970s and are recognized as the first professional Welsh folk band. They perform instrumental music and songs in Welsh. Career The original 1976 members were Dave Burns (guitar), Dafydd Roberts (triple harp, flute), Gwyndaf Roberts (knee harp and bass) and Iolo Jones (fiddle). The four individuals were brought together by the Welsh Committee of the Lorient Festival who were eager that a Welsh traditional group should represent the nation at that year's Interceltique festival in Lorient. Here they met The Dubliners, who suggested that they should stay together and turn professional. When they arrived in Brittany they had to think of a name and to reflect their status they called themselves Ar Log which means 'For Hire'.
