Swallows And Amazons (TV Series)
''Swallows and Amazons'' is a 1963 BBC children's television series based on the 1930 Swallows and Amazons, novel of the same name by Arthur Ransome, about the holiday adventures of two groups of children, the Swallows (Walkers) and the Amazons (Blacketts), sailing on a lake and camping on an island in the Lake District in the 1930s. The series of 6 episodes was shot on location on Coniston Water. Arthur Ransome, who lived nearby at Nibthwaite, was not impressed: :They began by proposing to blow up some of the rocks in the Peel Island harbour, and went on from there. According to Arthur their child-actors were ugly, their Captain Flint was 'common', their script a travesty of his book, their rural characters were made to talk Cockney, and they introduced some Cockney villains. John Paul (actor)
John Paul (20 April 1921 – 23 February 1995) was a British actor. He is best known for his television roles, particularly as Dr Spencer Quist in ''Doomwatch'' (1970–1972) and Marcus Agrippa in ''I, Claudius'' (1976), both for BBC Television. An early role was as the lead in the ITV series '' Probation Officer'' in the early 1960s. He appeared as ''Captain Flint'' in a BBC adaptation of Arthur Ransome's ''Swallows and Amazons'' in 1963. He had guest roles in episodes of popular television series such as ''Out of the Unknown'', ''Doctor Finlay's Casebook'', '' The Avengers'', '' Dixon of Dock Green'', '' The Saint'', ''Marked Personal'' and '' The New Avengers'', mostly during the 1960s and 1970s. Bernard Kay
Bernard Frederic Bemrose Kay (23 February 1928 – 25 December 2014) was an English actor with an extensive theatre, television, and film repertoire. Career Kay began his working life as a reporter for the ''Bolton Evening News'', and a stringer for the ''Manchester Guardian''. He was conscripted in 1946 and started acting in the army. Kay gained a scholarship to study at the Old Vic Theatre School and became a professional in 1950, as a member of the company which reopened the Old Vic after World War II. Swallows And Amazons Series
The ''Swallows and Amazons'' series is a series of twelve children's adventure novels by English author Arthur Ransome. Set in the interwar period, the novels involve group adventures by children, mainly in the school holidays and mainly in England. They revolve around outdoor activities, especially sailing. Literary critic Peter Hunt believes it "changed British literature, affected a whole generation's view of holidays, helped to create the national image of the English Lake District and added Arthur Ransome's name to the select list of classic British children's authors." The series remains popular and inspires visits to the Lake District and Norfolk Broads, where many of the books are set. There are several societies for studying and promoting Ransome's work, notably this series. The earliest was the Arthur Ransome Club in Japan.
