Swallownest Railway Station
Swallownest railway station was a planned railway station which was planned to open to serve the growing townships of Aston and Swallownest east of Sheffield. It appeared in the British Railways Working Timetable very briefly in the Autumn changes in 1993 being withdrawn from them at the following change (Spring 1994). The plan was to build a small station at the point where the Sheffield Victoria to Worksop line passed beneath the Swallownest to Beighton road (Chesterfield Road) on the south side to the villages, approximately one mile west of the site of the old Waleswood Station which closed in 1955. As part of the plan to increase rail usage in the area and with the expansion of Swallownest towards the line this was considered the best location for a station which could then be incorporated into the timetable. Aston, South Yorkshire
Aston is a residential village in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. The village falls within the Holderness ward of the borough. Aston is approximately from Rother Valley Country Park. History Aston was traditionally a farming village and some old farm buildings still line the main road. Swallownest is a village in the civil parish of Aston cum Aughton and the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. The village is south of Rotherham and from Sheffield. Sheffield Victoria was the main railway station in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, on the Great Central Railway, between Chesterfield and Penistone. History Early history Engineered by Joseph Locke, the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway linking Manchester and Sheffield opened in 1845. Midland Railway
The Midland Railway (MR) was a railway company in the United Kingdom from 1844. The Midland was one of the largest railway companies in Britain in the early 20th century, and the largest employer in Derby, where it had its headquarters. It amalgamated with several other railways to create the London, Midland and Scottish Railway at grouping in 1922. Treeton railway station is a former railway station in the centre of Treeton, Rotherham, England. History The station was situated on the North Midland Railway's line between Rotherham Masborough and Chesterfield, widely known as "The Old Road". This line, which remains well used by freight, follows the Rother Valley. Treeton was a coal-mining village, though Treeton Colliery closed in 1990. The original Treeton station opened on 6 April 1841 but closed the following year. A new station, on the same site, was opened on 1 October 1884 and closed on 29 October 1951, although it was used for a small number of excursion trains after that date. Sheffield District Railway
The Sheffield District Railway was a railway line in South Yorkshire, England. It was built to give the Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast Railway access to Sheffield, primarily for goods traffic, for which a large goods depot at Attercliffe, in Sheffield, was built. The construction was sponsored by the LD&ECR and the Great Eastern Railway together, with the support of the Midland Railway, which agreed running powers over sections of its own lines. The Sheffield District Railway opened in 1900. The LD&ECR operated the passenger service, although the Midland Railway later ran passenger trains too. West Tinsley railway station is a former railway station in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. History The station served the communities of Tinsley and Carbrook and was situated on the Sheffield District Railway between Brightside Junction and Tinsley Yard, immediately adjacent to Sheffield Road, Tinsley. It opened on 30 September 1900 as "Tinsley Road", but was renamed "West Tinsley" by the GCR on 1 July 1907. It closed on 11 September 1939. It was briefly reopened from 6 October 1946 to 17 March 1947. The station had two wooden platforms each with wooden buildings very similar to Catcliffe, this being to reduce weight as the station was situated on top of an embankment which carried the line across the Don Valley from Brightside to Catcliffe.
