State Central Navy Testing Range
The State Central Navy Testing Range (russian: «Государственный центральный морской полигон», ''Gosudarstvennyj central'nyj morskoj poligon'') at Nyonoksa is the main rocket launching site of the Soviet Navy and later the Russian Navy. The site is located east from in the settlement of Sopka north of the Nyonoksa. History It was established in 1954. Since 1965 numerous rockets of the types R-27, R-29, R-39 Rif and R-39M were launched from Nyonoksa. Accidents On 15 December 2015, an accident during a missile launch test resulted in a block of flats in the village being hit by part of a rocket. On 8 August 2019 an explosion caused the Nyonoksa radiation accident with several scientists being killed. Nyonoksa
Nyonoksa, also Nenoksa, (russian: Нёнокса ) is a rural locality (a '' selo'') under the administrative jurisdiction of Severodvinsk Town of Oblast Significance, Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russia. It is located at the coast of the Dvina Bay of the White Sea (the Summer Coast) northwest of the city of Severodvinsk. The Nyonoksa railway station is from Nyonoksa at the mostly military village of Sopka along the Northern Railway line from Severodvinsk. Nyonoksa is accessible by land vehicles only during the winter months when the nearby swampland freezes. R-39M
R-39UTTH BarkUTTH means "Improved tactical and technical characteristics", NATO reporting name SS-NX-28, was a Russian submarine-launched ballistic missile. The missile was an upgraded version of the R-39 missile that was designed for the Typhoon class. The new missile was to be carried by the new Russian nuclear submarines of the Borei class. The third test launch of a prototype R-39M on 25 November 1998 resulted in a catastrophic failure of the SLBM's booster. The missile exploded roughly 200 meters after take-off from its ground-based launch facility. Having failed its first three test firings the project was ordered abandoned by the Russian Security Council. The missile was later replaced by the Bulava and Layner missile systems.
