The South of England Championships, also known as the South of England Open Championships, was an outdoor tennis event held on grass courts at the Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club in Eastbourne, United Kingdom from 1881 until 1972. History The competition at Eastbourne, even from its early beginnings, was considered one of the most prestigious tournaments that attracted large entries and matches even in those days and it was the world's largest tournament in terms of participants at the turn of the twentieth century. Women's tennis The first tournament to be staged at Devonshire Park was a women's event in 1881, known as the ''South of England Championships'', and usually held every September. Eastbourne
Eastbourne () is a town and seaside resort in East Sussex, on the south coast of England, east of Brighton and south of London. Eastbourne is immediately east of Beachy Head, the highest chalk sea cliff in Great Britain and part of the larger Eastbourne Downland Estate. The seafront consists largely of Victorian hotels, a pier, theatre, contemporary art gallery and a Napoleonic era fort and military museum. Though Eastbourne is a relatively new town, there is evidence of human occupation in the area from the Stone Age. The town grew as a fashionable tourist resort largely thanks to prominent landowner, William Cavendish, later to become the Duke of Devonshire. Josiah Ritchie
Major Josiah George Ritchie (18 October 1870 – 28 February 1955) was a tennis player from Great Britain. Major was his first name, not a military title. He was born in Westminster, educated at Brighton College and died in Ashford. Career Ritchie was a three-time medalist at the 1908 London Olympics, winning a Gold (Men's Singles), Silver (Men's Doubles) and Bronze (Men's Indoor Singles) medal. He was the last British player to win an Olympic medal in singles until Andy Murray won Gold in the 2012 games, also in London. In 1908 and 1910 he and Anthony Wilding won the doubles in Wimbledon. Charlotte Cooper (tennis)
Charlotte "Chattie" Cooper Sterry (née Charlotte Reinagle Cooper; 22 September 1870 – 10 October 1966) was an English female tennis player who won five singles titles at the Wimbledon Championships and in 1900 became Olympic champion. In winning in Paris on 11 July 1900, she became the first female Olympic tennis champion as well as the first individual female Olympic champion. Early life and career Charlotte Cooper was born on 22 September 1870 at Waldham Lodge, Ealing, Middlesex, England, the youngest daughter of Henry Cooper, a miller, and his wife Teresa Georgiana Miller. Helen Jackson (tennis)
Helen Jackson was an English tennis player who played during the last decade of the 19th century. Career In 1887 she won the Darlington Open Tournament. In 1891 Jackson competed in the singles event at the Wimbledon Championships for the first time. In the first round she defeated Maud Shackle, but lost in the quarterfinals to Bertha Steedman in two sets. The following year, 1892, she lost in the first round (which was the quarterfinal) to Shackle. Her last entry came in 1895 when she reached the final of the All-comers' event after victories against J.M. Corder, Bernard and Alice Pickering. She lost the final in two close sets to Charlotte Cooper after having led both sets 5–0. Maud Shackle
Maud Shackle (4 August 1870–16 February 1962) was an English tennis player active during the last decade and a half of the 19th century. In 1889 Shackle won the singles title of the Kent Championships in Beckenham, defeating May Jacks in the final in straight sets. The next year, 1890, fortunes were reversed when Jacks beat Shackle in the final in three sets. In 1891 and 1892 it was again Shackle who won the title by defeating Jacks in the final, both times in three sets. Shackles's fourth and final title at Beckenham came in 1893 when she won in straight sets against Ruth Legh. Jacks and Shackle also met in the final of the 1891 women's singles events at the British Covered Court Championships. Bertha Steedman
Bertha Steedman (20 July 1866 – 11 January 1945) was a British tennis player who won nine double titles at the All England Championships, a precursor to the Wimbledon Championships, between 1889 and 1899. Steedman won the All England Championships doubles tournament with her sister Mary Steedman in 1889 and 1890. Edith Mary Hutchinson Cole (10 September 1862 - 22 October 1945) née Edith Coleridge also known as Edith Coleridge Cole was an English tennis player of the late 19th century. She won the singles at the prestigious Northern Championships in Manchester in 1883, and was also an All Comers' finalist at the Wimbledon Championships in 1887. Margaret Bracewell
Emily Margaret Moore (née Bracewell 13 May 1861 – 14 May 1940) known as Margaret Bracewell during her playing days was an English tennis player active in the late 19th century. She was considered one of the best contemporary English lawn tennis players of the mid to late 1880s. She was a two time finalist at the prestigious Northern Championships in 1885 and 1887. The Eastbourne International is a tennis tournament on the WTA Tour and the ATP Tour held at the Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club, Eastbourne, United Kingdom. Held since 1974, it is classified as a WTA 500 series on the WTA Tour and an ATP Tour 250 series on the ATP Tour. The tournament is played on outdoor grass courts, and is generally considered a "warm-up" for the Wimbledon Championships, a major tournament, which begins the following week. It was originally just part of the WTA Tour, but from 2009 it was combined as an ATP Tour event. It replaced the Nottingham Open grass court tournament from 2009–2014. Nottingham returned for 2015–2016 with no ATP Tour event in Eastbourne, however Eastbourne replaced the Nottingham event again from 2017 onwards.
