Elections to the European Parliament take place every five years by universal adult suffrage; with more than 400 million people eligible to vote, they are considered the second largest democratic elections in the world after India's. Until 2019, 751 MEPs were elected to the European Parliament, which has been directly elected since 1979. Since the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU in 2020, the number of MEPs, including the president, has been 705. No other EU institution is directly elected, with the Council of the European Union and the European Council being only indirectly legitimated through national elections. Robert Rochefort
Robert Rochefort (born 19 September 1955 in Paris) is a French economist and politician. Political career In 2009, Rochefort joined the MoDem, and was selected to lead the MoDem list in the South-West constituency ahead of the 2009 European elections. He was the MoDem's only elected Member of the European Parliament in that region. He has since been serving on the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection; following the 2014 elections, he became one of the committee's vice-chairmen under the leadership of Vicky Ford until January 2017. In addition to his committee assignments, he has been a member of the parliament's delegation for relations with Iraq. In August 2016, Rochefort was arrested by police after being caught masturbating in a DIY store in Vélizy-Villacoublay (Yvelines), near Paris. Jean-Claude Martinez (born 30 July 1945, in Sète, Hérault) is a French politician and Member of the European Parliament for the south-west of France. He was a member and a vice-president of the Front National, and was among the ''Non-Inscrit''s until the 2007 formation of the Identity, Tradition, Sovereignty Group in the European Parliament. Elections to the European Parliament were held in France on 13 June 2004. The opposition Socialist Party made substantial gains, although this was mainly at the expense of minor parties. The governing Union for a Popular Movement and Union for French Democracy also made gains. Newropeans was a European political party that contested the 2009 European Parliament elections in the Netherlands, Germany and five regions of France on a platform of European federalism and reform. They received a total of 36,871 votes, an average of 0.1% in the constituencies they stood. History The party was founded by Franck Biancheri in June 2005 when the referendum on the constitution failed. Biancheri had previously founded the European Students' Forum (AEGEE) in 1985, who had been a key driver behind the Erasmus student exchange programme, and a thinktank called '' Leap2020'' in 1998.
