The Società per le strade ferrate dell'Alta Italia (''Upper Italian Railways'', ''SFAI'') was an Italian railway company from 1865 to 1885. History It was established on 1 July 1865 with of line it acquired from the state railway of the Kingdom of Sardinia (Piedmont) (), the part of the state railway of the former Kingdom of Lombardy–Venetia () that had been absorbed into the Kingdom of Italy in 1859 after the Second Italian War of Independence and some other private railways. At its establishment, it included the Turin–Genoa, the Fréjus line, the Turin–Milan, Milan–Chiasso, Milan–Domodossola, Milan–Bologna and the Bologna–Pistoia lines. After Austria's defeat in the Third Italian War of Independence in 1866, the railways of the Veneto (amounting to ), including the Milan–Venice line, were transferred to the SFAI. Locomotives SFAI 301-311 of the Società per le strade ferrate dell'Alta Italia (SFAI) were a group of steam locomotives derived from the rebuilding of some machines in the 31-80 series. History The machines, built by Stephenson in 1857–1858 with a wheel arrangement, were modified with the installation of a new firebox. At the same time the wheel arrangement was modified to to provide greater adhesive weight. Between 1877 and 1882, six engines were rebuilt and numbered 292 to 297. Between 1884 and 1885, four more engines were rebuilt and one new one was purchased. The entire group was then renumbered as 301–311. Ownership change In 1885, with the creation of the great national networks, the machines were incorporated into the stock of the Rete Adriatica, which classified them as class 110 with numbers 1101–1111. Locomotives SFAI 250-258 were 0-4-2 steam locomotives (with tenders) of the Società per le strade ferrate dell'Alta Italia (SFAI). History The first six units were built in 1855 for the Strade Ferrate dello Stato Piemontese (SFSP), where they carried the numbers 99-104. Five years later, in 1860, three similar locomotives were built for the Victor Emmanuel Railway (VE). FS Class 103 was a class of 2-2-2 steam locomotives of the Italian State Railways (FS), originally built for the Strade Ferrate dello Stato Piemontese (SFSP). Locomotives LVCI 1-50 and 155-164 were 2-2-2 steam locomotives of the LVCI built for service on the railways of the Lombard-Veneto Kingdom. Numbers 1-50 were built by Robert Stephenson & Company and numbers 155-164 were built by Beyer, Peacock & Company. History The two series of locomotives entered service between 1857 and 1858. In 1859, following the Second Italian War of Independence, the LVCI network was divided into a Lombard part ( Lombardy was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia) and a Venetian part (Veneto remained a possession of the Austrian Empire).
