Society For Creative Anachronism
The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is an international living history group with the aim of studying and recreating mainly Medieval European cultures and their histories before the 17th century. A quip often used within the SCA describes it as a group devoted to the Middle Ages "as they ought to have been", choosing to "selectively recreate the culture, choosing elements of the culture that interest and attract us". Founded in 1966, the non-profit educational corporation has over 20,000 paid members as of 2020 with about 60,000 total participants in the society (including members and non-member participants). History The SCA's roots can be traced to a backyard party of a UC Berkeley medieval studies graduate, the author Diana Paxson, in Berkeley, California, on May Day in 1966. Karen Kruse Anderson
Karen Anderson (born June Millichamp Kruse ; September 16, 1932 – March 17, 2018) published fiction and essays solo and in collaboration with her husband and others. Biography Anderson was born June Millichamp Kruse in Erlanger, Kentucky, a suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio. In the 1980s she co-authored several books in collaboration with her husband, Poul Anderson. She is noted as the first person to use the term ''filk music'' in print and she wrote the first published science fiction haiku (or scifaiku), "Six Haiku" (''The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction'', July 1962). She also probably coined the term ''sophont'' to describe the general class of sapient beings. In 1950 she, along with three friends, founded a Sherlock Holmes society, naming it the "Red Circle Society." SCA Fencing
Rapier Combat is a style of historical fencing practiced in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). The primary focus is to study, replicate and compete with styles of rapier sword-fighting found in Europe during the Renaissance period, using blunted steel swords and a variety of off-hand defensive items. Participants wear period clothing while competing, along with or incorporating protective equipment (such as modern fencing masks) for safety. In the April 2020 update of the rules, the sport was renamed 'Fencing Combat'. SCA Armoured Combat
SCA armoured combat, or informally heavy combat, is a combat sport developed by the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) in which participants in protective body armour compete in mock combat, individual tournaments inspired by forms of historical combat, and tournament combat practiced in medieval Europe. Groups also compete, under supervision, in group battles which may approximate historically real combat, using SCA approved safe weapons. Combats are performed under the watch of marshals to maintain safety. It is variously considered a combat sport, contact sport, or a form of martial art. The slang term "heavy" is used to distinguish this from "light" combat, now almost exclusively referred to as rapier combat. Participants use armour and weapons specified by SCA standards and rules. West Kingdom
The West Kingdom (also known as The Kingdom of the West) is the oldest kingdom (or branch) of the historical reenactment organization, the Society for Creative Anachronism. It comprises Northern California (including the San Francisco area), Nevada, Alaska, Japan, Korea and the Pacific Rim. History The Kingdom of the West was the first SCA group, founded in 1966. An initial party with David Thewlis, Steve Henderson, Ken de Maiffe, and author Diana Paxson (at the time a medieval history major at the University of California, Berkeley) and others was held in Paxson's backyard. Many of the attendees were at Berkeley, and were history buffs and science fiction fantasy fans.
