Sketch Comedy
Sketch comedy comprises a series of short, amusing scenes or vignettes, called "sketches", commonly between one and ten minutes long, performed by a group of comic actors or comedians. The form developed and became popular in vaudeville, and is used widely in variety shows, comedy talk shows, and some sitcoms and children's television series. The sketches may be improvised live by the performers, developed through improvisation before public performance, or scripted and rehearsed in advance like a play. ''The Kids in the Hall'' is a Canadian sketch comedy TV series that aired for five seasons from 1988 to 1995, and a sixth revival season in 2022, starring the comedy troupe The Kids in the Hall. The troupe, consisting of comedians Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, Bruce McCulloch, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson, appeared as almost all the characters throughout the series, both male and female, and also wrote most of the sketches. The series debuted as a one-hour pilot special which aired on HBO and CBC Television in 1988, and began airing as a regular weekly series on both services in 1989. ''The Carol Burnett Show'' is an American variety/sketch comedy television show that originally ran on CBS from September 11, 1967, to March 29, 1978, for 279 episodes, and again with nine episodes in fall 1991. It starred Carol Burnett, Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence, and Lyle Waggoner. In 1975, frequent guest star Tim Conway became a regular after Waggoner left the series. In 1977, Dick Van Dyke replaced Korman but it was agreed that he was not a match and he left after 10 episodes. The series originated in CBS Television City's Studio 33, and won 25 primetime Emmy Awards. "The Family" is a series of comedy sketches featured on ''The Carol Burnett Show'', with one and final installment airing on '' Carol Burnett & Company''. ''The Carol Burnett Show'' introduced the skit starting in the 1973-1974 season. Overall, it would air new installments of the skit for the last five seasons of its total 11-season run; the skit aired between the 1973-1974 season to the 1977-1978 season on the show. However, the final installment of "The Family" would not air until September 8, 1979 on an entirely different four-week summer series entitled ''Carol Burnett & Company''. This was the only installment of "The Family" that did not air on ''The Carol Burnett Show'', which had completed its run almost a year and a half earlier on March 29, 1978. Very few characters of the BBC television series ''Monty Python's Flying Circus'' appeared in more than one episode, and when they did, it was usually to link sketches together. ''El Chapulín Colorado'' (English: ''The Red Grasshopper'') is a Mexican television comedy series that ran from 1973 to 1979 and parodied superhero shows. ''Chespirito'' is a Mexican sketch comedy show created by and starring comedian and actor Roberto Gomez Bolaños, whose nickname gave the show its title. Two series were produced with the same title. ''A Bit of Fry & Laurie'' is a British sketch comedy television series written by and starring former Cambridge Footlights members Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, broadcast on both BBC1 and BBC2 between 1989 and 1995. It ran for four series and totalled 26 episodes, including a 36-minute pilot episode in 1987. As in ''The Two Ronnies'', elaborate wordplay and innuendo were staples of its material.
