Same-sex marriage has been legal in Uruguay since August 5, 2013. A bill for legalization was passed by the Chamber of Representatives on December 12, 2012, in a vote of 81–6. The Senate approved it with some minor amendments on April 2, 2013, in a 23–8 vote. The amended bill was approved 71–21 by the Chamber of Representatives on April 10, and was signed into law by President José Mujica on May 3, 2013. It took effect on August 5. Uruguay was the third country in South America, after Argentina and Brazil, and the fourteenth in the world to legalize same-sex marriage. María Margarita Percovich Aldabe (born 21 January 1941) is an Uruguayan former politician and activist. A member of the Broad Front, she served as Senator of the Republic from 2005 to 2010 and as National Representative from 2000 to 2005. She was one of the drafters of the 2007 Sexual and Reproductive Health bill that sought to legalize abortion, but which, after being approved in parliament, was vetoed by President Tabaré Vázquez. 2009 Uruguayan General Election
General elections were held in Uruguay on 25 October 2009 alongside a 2009 Uruguayan referendum, two-part referendum. As no candidate for president received more than 50% of the vote, a second round was held on 29 November between the top two candidates, José Mujica of the ruling Broad Front (Uruguay), Broad Front (who received 48% of the vote) and former president Luis Alberto Lacalle of the National Party (Uruguay), National Party (29%). Mujica won the run-off with 55% of the vote.
