Same-sex Marriage In American Samoa
Same-sex marriage is not currently performed in American Samoa, though same-sex marriages from other jurisdictions are recognized. On June 26, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in '' Obergefell v. Hodges'' that the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees same-sex couples the right to marry. The ruling legalized same-sex marriage nationwide in the United States; however, it is uncertain how the ruling applies to American Samoa as the territory is unincorporated and unorganized. The Governor of American Samoa, Lolo Matalasi Moliga, said he believed that the Supreme Court's ruling does not apply to American Samoa. The ''Samoa News'' is a newspaper published in Pago Pago, American Samoa. In 1981, Samoa News was the major newspaper distributed in both of the Samoas. In January 1985, Lewis Wolman became editor of Samoa News. The Samoa News Ltd. was established in 1986, with Fuga Teleso as the majority shareholder. Wolman purchased Teleso's shares on November 18, 1986, and became the publisher-editor for Samoa News. It began printing on a web press in December 1989, allowing for an increase in paper size. Tuaolo Manaia Fruean (born March 1945) is an American Samoan politician, judge, and civil servant. He has served in both the American Samoa House of Representatives and the American Samoa Senate, and as Commissioner of Public Safety in the Cabinet of Governor Togiola Tulafono. Faʻafafine are people who identify themselves as having a third gender or non-binary role in Samoa, American Samoa and the Samoan diaspora. A recognised gender identity/gender role in traditional Samoan society, and an integral part of Samoan culture, ''faʻafafine'' are assigned male at birth, and explicitly embody both masculine and feminine gender traits in a way unique to Polynesia.
