Saint Jerome In Penitence (Lotto, Paris)
''Saint Jerome in Penitence'' is an oil-on-panel painting by Italian Renaissance artist Lorenzo Lotto. Its signature ("Lotus") is fully legible, but the final number of the date is illegible, though it is usually dated to around 1506. It is now in the Louvre. It is traditionally ascribed to the painter's period in Treviso, possibly commissioned by bishop Bernardo de' Rossi for private devotion. A 1510 inventory shows that de' Rossi owned a painting of Saint Jerome, but it is not known for certain that it was the work now in Paris. Some theories hold it to have been a cover for a portrait. Lorenzo Lotto
Lorenzo Lotto (c. 1480 – 1556/57) was an Italian Painting, painter, draughtsman, and illustrator, traditionally placed in the Venetian school (art), Venetian school, though much of his career was spent in other north Italian cities. He painted mainly altarpieces, religious subjects and portraits. He was active during the High Renaissance and the first half of the Mannerism, Mannerist period, but his work maintained a generally similar High Renaissance style throughout his career, although his nervous and eccentric posings and distortions represented a transitional stage to the Florentine and Roman Mannerists. Bernardo De' Rossi
Bernardo de' Rossi (26 August 1468 – 28 June 1527) was an Italian bishop and patron of the arts. Biography Rossi was the son of a feudal family of the area of Parma, at a young age he received the archdeaconate of Padua and the Abbey of St. Crisogonus in Zadar. On 4 Apr 1487, thanks to the support of the Republic of Venice, he was appointed Bishop of Belluno. On 16 Aug 1499, he was appointed as bishop of Treviso. Here he held a small court, featuring artists such as Lorenzo Lotto, who painted a portrait of him around 1505. In 1503, de' Rossi entered into conflict with the Venetian podestà of Treviso, Girolamo Contarini. Joseph Fesch, Prince of France (3 January 1763 – 13 May 1839) was a French priest and diplomat, who was the maternal half-uncle of Napoleon Bonaparte (half-brother of Napoleon's mother Laetitia). In the wake of his nephew, he became Archbishop of Lyon and Cardinal. He was also one of the most famous art collectors of his period, remembered for having established the Musée Fesch in Ajaccio, which remains one of the most important Napoleonic collections of art. ''Saint Jerome in Penitence'' is a signed oil-on-panel painting by Italian Renaissance artist Lorenzo Lotto, created ''c.'' 1509. It is now in the Museo nazionale di Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, to which it was donated by a private collector in 1916. Undated by the artist, it was probably produced during the painter's stay in Rome and shows the influence of other artists then active at Pope Julius II's court, most notably Raphael. The Mausoleum of Hadrian, usually known as Castel Sant'Angelo (; English: ''Castle of the Holy Angel''), is a towering cylindrical building in Parco Adriano, Rome, Italy. ''Saint Jerome in Penitence'' is a 1515 oil-on-canvas painting by Italian Renaissance artist Lorenzo Lotto, now in the Allentown Art Museum in Allentown, Pennsylvania. It is signed on the rock next to the saint. It was produced early in the painter's time in Bergamo. It was commissioned by Domenico Tasso, count and apostolic knight, for his new house on Via Pignolo in the city. Lotto had met Tasso in Rome and it may have been Tasso who drew him to Bergamo. Carlo Ridolfi mentions it among the paintings "in Domenego Dal Cornello's house" in 1648. In the 18th century Tasso's descendants sold it off to help with their financial difficulties.
