Sumter National Forest
The Sumter National Forest is one of two forests in South Carolina that are managed together by the United States Forest Service, the other being the Francis Marion National Forest. The Sumter National Forest consists of which are divided into 3 distinct sections in western and central South Carolina. The Enoree Ranger District is the largest, comprising roughly 170,000 acres in Chester, Fairfield, Laurens, Newberry, and Union counties. Next is the Long Cane Ranger District, comprising about 120,000 acres in Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, McCormick, and Saluda counties. The smallest district is the Andrew Pickens Ranger District comprising over 85,000 acres which lies entirely in Oconee county and is part of the Appalachian Mountains. CSS Sumter
CSS ''Sumter'', converted from the 1859-built merchant steamer ''Habana'', was the first steam cruiser of the Confederate States Navy during the American Civil War. She operated as a commerce raider in the Caribbean and in the Atlantic Ocean against Union merchant shipping between July and December 1861, taking eighteen prizes, but was trapped in Gibraltar by Union Navy warships. Decommissioned, she was sold in 1862 to the British office of a Confederate merchant and renamed ''Gibraltar'', successfully running the Union blockade in 1863 and surviving the war. Sumter Township is a township in McLeod County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 486 at the 2020 census. History Sumter Township was named after Fort Sumter, the Civil War fort. Geography The township is southwest of the center of McLeod County. The city of Brownton, a separate municipality, is surrounded by the southwest part of the township. Glencoe, the county seat, is east of the center of the township, while Hutchinson, the largest city in the county, is to the north. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Sumter Township has a total area of , of which are land and , or 2.06%, are water. The township is in the watershed of the South Fork of the Crow River. Buffalo Creek, a tributary of the South Fork, crosses the southern part of the township from west to east.
