Suillus Kaibabensis
''Suillus kaibabensis'' is a species of fungus in the family Boletaceae. The species was first described scientifically by American mycologist Harry D. Thiers. Description ''Suillus kaibabensis'' is a hardy yellow member of the genus ''Suillus''. While yellow is the primary color, it can also include brown and white tones in varying degrees as well. This mushroom has a stem around 2–4 cm long, and 1–2 cm thick. The cap is broad and convex to flat, typical of many species of boletes. The stipe is bare, spotted with olive brown and can be reddish-brown at the base. The pores are yellowish-brown that can turn a salmon color with age. Taxonomy This species was first described by Harry D. Thiers in 1978. This species bears close resemblance to ''Suillus granulatus''. The species has a very common look to other ''Suillus'', and is rather difficult to tell apart other than the close association with Ponderosa pine. Harry Thiers
Harry Delbert Thiers (January 22, 1919 in Fort McKavett, Texas – August 8, 2000 in Ohio) was an American mycologist who studied and named many fungi native to North America, particularly California. Thiers taught mycology at San Francisco State University. He comprehensively revised and expanded on the North American collection of boletes and named many new species. The Fungus Federation of Santa Cruz (FFSC) is a North American mycological club that evolved as a result of David Arora’s mushroom classes and early Fungus Fairs in the Santa Cruz, California area in the 1970’s. Mission The mission of the Fungus Federation of Santa Cruz is "to foster and expand, through education and by example, the understanding and appreciation of mycology and to assist the general public and related institutions or groups to further this goal". Organization FFSC was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 1984. Activities There are many facets to the FFSC, with something to interest everyone. On the underside of the cap there is usually a spongy surface with pores, instead of the gills typical of mushrooms. However, there are some boletes that are gilled, such as species of ''Chroogomphus'', ''Gomphidius'', ''Paxillus'', ''Phylloporus'' and ''Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca''.
