''Stanwellia grisea'', also known as the Melbourne trapdoor spider, is a species of Mygalomorphae, mygalomorph spider in the Pycnothelidae Family (biology), family. It is endemism, endemic to Australia. It was species description, described in 1901 by British arachnology, arachnologist Henry Roughton Hogg. Description Female spiders grow up to 35 mm in body length; males to 25 mm. The body is brown; the abdomen may be paler with a darker, rib-like pattern on the upper surface. Large Chelicerae, cheliceral fangs are displayed when the spider feels threatened. Distribution and habitat The spiders are found in southern Victoria (Australia), Victoria in tall open forest habitats. Henry Roughton Hogg
Henry Roughton Hogg (9 February 1846 – 30 November 1923) was a British amateur arachnologist and businessman who lived in both Australia and Britain. Hogg emigrated to Australia in December 1873 and co-founded a mercantile and shipping agency in Melbourne, becoming a prominent member of the business community. He joined the Field Naturalists' Club and the Royal Society of Victoria and acquired a specialist knowledge of the Spider, spiders of Australia and New Zealand. Hogg was given access to specimens of spiders collected by the 1894 Horn expedition, Horn scientific expedition to central Australia and contributed the section on spiders in the published results of the expedition. Hogg and his wife returned to England in August 1900.
