Dawlis Mill–Spring Mills Historic District
The Dawlis Mill–Spring Mills Historic District is a historic district (United States), historic district located at 525 and 530 NJ 31 in the townships of East Amwell Township, New Jersey, East Amwell and West Amwell Township, New Jersey, West Amwell in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 27, 2004, for its significance in architecture, commerce, industry, and settlement. The district includes six contributing buildings, two contributing sites, and one contributing object. The hamlet built around the Dawlis Mill was known as Spring Mills until around 1900. With History and description The ruins of a grist mill built in 1736 by William Dawlis contributes to the district. It was located on a small stream named the Clearwater Rill. Independence is a town in Allegany County, New York, United States. The population was 1,095 at the 2020 census. The town is in the southeast corner of Allegany County, southeast of the village of Wellsville. History The first permanent settlement occurred in 1819 at Whitesville, although an attempt was made to settle the town in 1798. The town of Independence was formed in 1821 from part of the town of Alfred. Independence was reduced by the formation of the towns of Andover (1824) and Willing (1851). Historians have found no particular reason as to why the name Independence was chosen. From November 16, 1896, through June 1936 Whitesville was served by the New York & Pennsylvania Railway (and predecessors) as part of its Canisteo to Ceres (via Greenwood, Genesee, Oswayo and Shinglehouse) main line. Spring Mills Historic District is a national historic district located near Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia. It encompasses five contributing buildings, constructed between about 1790 and 1922, and two contributing sites. They include the Falling Waters Presbyterian Church (1834) and Manse (1922) and Stephen Hammond Mill (c. 1790), Miller's House (c. 1790), and Spring House (c. 1800).
