Sports channels are television speciality channels (usually available exclusively through cable and terrestrial and satellite) broadcast sporting events, usually live, and when not broadcasting events, sports news and other related programming. The first sports channel was from the SportsChannel networks, which went on the air in 1977 with the original SportsChannel (now MSG Plus). ESPN began broadcasting in 1979. Since then, many channels have surfaced around the world, many focusing on one sport in particular, or one region of a country, showing only their local team's games. These networks have greatly improved the availability of sports broadcasts, generating opportunities such as the ability for one person to see every single game their team plays over the course of the season. Sky Sports is a group of British subscription sports channels operated by the satellite pay television company Sky Group (a division of Comcast), and is the dominant subscription television sports brand in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Golf Channel France was a television channel broadcasting from Luxembourg devoted to golf. It was owned by Mediawan Thematics. Canal+ Sport is a French TV channel devoted to sports programming and is part of the "Les Chaînes Canal+" themed channels of Canal+. History Canal+ Vert launched on 31 August 1998, on satellite and cable as a programme multicast of Canal+ sports programmes. As part of the creation of the Canal+ Bouquet (later, "Les Chaînes Canal+" ) the channel changed its name on 1 November 2003 to Canal+ Sport. Automoto la chaîne is a French television channel dedicated to motorsports. History of the channel The channel was created in March 1996 for the AB Sat package under the name Automobile as a channel dedicated to cars in all ways (collections, history of classic models, tracks, etc.). Z Sports is an Angolan sports network owned by ZAP. The channel started in 2024, effectively replacing pop-up channels used by the provider to carry La Liga and Ligue 1 matches.
