Southern Line (Auckland)
The Southern Line in Auckland, New Zealand, is the name given to suburban train services that operate between Britomart Station in central Auckland and Pukekohe via Newmarket. Routing From Waitematā to Newmarket, Southern Line services use the Newmarket Line, then follow the North Auckland Line to Westfield Junction, and thence onto the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) line as far as Pukekohe, the terminus of the Southern Line. In its entirety, this line follows the original 1875 North Island Main Trunk route between central Auckland and Pukekohe. The line, originally single-tracked, was duplicated, piecemeal, between 1909 and 1939. In 1915, the original single-track Parnell tunnel was bypassed by a twin-track tunnel. The North Auckland Line (designation NAL) is a major section of New Zealand's Rail transport in New Zealand, national rail network, and is made up of the following parts: the portion of track that runs northward from Westfield Junction to Newmarket railway station, Auckland, Newmarket Station; from there, westward to Waitakere Railway Station, Waitakere; from there, northward to Otiria via Whangārei. The first section was opened in 1868 and the line was completed in 1925. Paerātā railway station is a railway station under construction in Auckland, New Zealand. It is due to open in 2026 as part of the Auckland railway electrification project. It will serve the Paerata area, linking with the new Paerata Rise housing development. The station will be located on the existing North Island Main Trunk railway line, adjacent to the planned eastern extent of the development. Between 1875 and 1972, it was a flag station, south of Auckland, on the North Island Main Trunk in New Zealand, serving the Paerata settlement. The original station was opened on 20 May 1875. Ngākōroa Railway Station
Ngākōroa railway station (formerly under the placeholder name Drury West railway station) is a railway station under construction in Auckland, New Zealand. It is due to open in 2026 as part of the Auckland railway electrification project. It will serve the Drury West and Runciman area, linking with new housing developments in the area. The station will be located on the existing rail line, about 450 m south of the existing intersection of State Highway 22/Karaka Road and Jesmond Road. New Zealand Upgrade Programme
On 29 January 2020, the New Zealand Upgrade Programme was announced by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. The programme is a NZ$, $12 billion infrastructure package to improve roads, rail, hospitals and schools around the country, of which $8 billion has been allocated and the other $4 billion is part of the infrastructure section of the 2020 New Zealand budget, 2020 budget. Wiri Railway Station
Wiri railway station is a defunct station on the Southern Line of the Auckland Railway Network in New Zealand. To the north is Puhinui railway station and to the south is Homai railway station. Originally opened on 7 August 1913 as a "tablet station", and fully on 9 December 1913 as a siding and for staff and work trains (not a public station), the station closed on 14 February 2005 because it had the lowest patronage in Auckland. On 5 July 2013, an extensive maintenance facility with stabling for 28 three-car trains was opened near the former station in preparation for the arrival of Auckland's new electric trains. The station is now used for train crew changes at Wiri Depot. The Third Main Line, which was completed in 2025, begins shortly before the station. Westfield Railway Station
Westfield railway station was a station of the Auckland railway network in New Zealand. The station closed to all services on 12 March 2017, following an announcement by Auckland Transport on 17 January 2017, because fewer than 330 passengers used it daily and it required a costly upgrade. The station was 640 metres south of Westfield Junction, where the Eastern and Southern Lines converge. It therefore served both lines. It had an island platform layout and was reached from a pedestrian overbridge at the end of Portage Road. The overbridge also spanned the adjacent Westfield marshalling yards and gives access to KiwiRail's operations centre and locomotive facility. Puhinui Railway Station
Puhinui railway station is a station of the Auckland rail network and is located in Papatoetoe, Auckland, New Zealand. Passenger services on the Eastern Line and Southern Line use the station. It is accessed from Puhinui Road from both sides of the tracks via a pedestrian bridge located at the site of a former level crossing (Puhinui Road itself now crosses on a bridge approximately 120m north of the pedestrian bridge). This is the nearest public transport access to the main cemetery for South Auckland; Manukau cemetery at 361 Puhinui Road, Wiri. Whangārei () is the northernmost city in New Zealand and the largest settlement of the Northland Region. It is part of the Whangarei District, created in 1989 from the former Whangarei City, Whangarei County and Hikurangi Town councils to administer both the city and its hinterland. Parnell railway station is a station serving the inner-city suburb of Parnell in Auckland, New Zealand. It is situated on the Newmarket Line, approximately 600m north of Parnell Tunnel, and is located in the Waipapa Valley adjacent to Auckland Domain. It serves Southern Line and Western Line trains. The station opened on 12 March 2017 with relatively basic facilities and initially serving a limited number of lines. Future development will involve building a second pedestrian underpass under the tracks to provide step-free access to the platforms, and constructing several new paths to provide more direct access to Auckland Domain, Parnell, New Zealand, Parnell Town Centre and the University of Auckland.
