Society Of London Theatre
The Society of London Theatre (SOLT) is a British trade association for West End theatre in London. It was founded in 1908 as Society of West End Theatre Managers, becoming the Society of West End Theatre in 1975, and then changing to its current name in 1994. SOLT is a not-for-profit organisation which speaks on behalf of the theatre owners, producers, and managers of all the major commercial and grant-aided theatres in London. SOLT shares an office with UK Theatre, its sister organisation. As well as advocating for the interests of its members, SOLT promotes theatre through activities including the Laurence Olivier Awards, the TKTS ticket booth, Theatre Tokens, a fortnightly printed listings guide and website. UK Theatre
UK Theatre is a British non-profit trade organisation representing theatre producers, managers, owners and operators in the United Kingdom. It partners and shares an office with the Society of London Theatre, its sister organisation. The organisation was founded in 1894 as the Theatrical Managers Association, with Sir Henry Irving as its first president. There are however records of the activity of a Theatrical Managers Association going back to at least 1866. Irving was still president in 1901. A sister organization is an agency or body which is nearly or completely dependent upon another organization to exist. Sister organizations may exist in several different fields from business, government, law enforcement, and within the military. Laurence Olivier Awards
The Laurence Olivier Awards, or simply The Olivier Awards, are presented annually by the Society of London Theatre to recognize excellence in professional theatre in London. The awards were originally known as the Society of West End Theatre Awards, but they were renamed in honour of the English actor of the same name in 1984. The awards are given annually to individuals involved in West End productions and other leading non-commercial theatres based in London across a range of categories covering plays, musicals, dance, opera and affiliate theatre. A discretionary non-competitive Special Olivier Award is also given each year. The TKTS ticket booths in New York City and London sell Broadway and Off-Broadway shows and dance events and West End theatre tickets, respectively, at discounts of 20–50% off the face value. It is owned by the Theatre Development Fund, a non-profit.
