Sheikh Shawkat Hossein Nilu
Sheikh Shawkat Hossain Nilu (3 April 1952 – 7 May 2017) was a Bangladeshi politician and chairman of the National People's Party. Early life Nilu was born on 3 April 1952 into the Sheikh family of Tungipara in Gopalganj District. His father was Sheikh Shahadat Hossain. Career Nilu joined Bangladesh Students' Union in the 1960s. He was the founding Agriculture Secretary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. He served as the Student Affairs Secretary to General Ziaur Rahman. He was the Secretary General of the Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal, the farmers' unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. He led the Progressive Nationalist Party (Progatishil Jatiyabadi Dal) which merged into the Jatiya Party, after Hussain Mohammad Ershad came to power and became a presidium member. Tungipara Upazila
Tungipara ( bn, টুঙ্গিপাড়া) is an upazila of Gopalganj District in the Division of Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is the birthplace of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founder of independent Bangladesh and his grave is also here. In 1995 it became an Upazila. Etymology There is a legend that this area used to be flooded. Some saints who practiced Islam relocated to this area from Persia. They started living in this area by making canopied houses at low cost. Such houses are called "Tong" in Bengali hence the name of the place is Tungipara (Tungi+para). "Para" means neighborhood. Geography Tungipara is located at on the north-eastern bank of the Modhumoti River. It is the most southern upazila of Gopalganj District. Gopalganj ( bn, গোপালগঞ্জ জেলা) is a district (''zilla'' in Bengali) in the Dhaka Division of Bangladesh. The district has about 1,172,415 civilians and its surface area is 1,490 km2. The main city of the district is also called Gopalganj. It stands on the bank of the Madhumati river and located at 23°00’47.67" N 89°49’21.41". It is bounded by Faridpur district on the North, Pirojpur and Bagerhat district on the south, Madaripur & Barisal district on the East and Narail district on the West. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party ( bn, বাংলাদেশ জাতীয়তাবাদী দল, Bangladesh Jātīyotābādī Dol; BNP) is a centre-right to right-wing nationalist, political party in Bangladesh and one of the major political parties of Bangladesh. General Ziaur Rahman (19 January 1936 – 30 May 1981), was a Bangladeshi military Officer (armed forces), officer and politician who served as the President of Bangladesh from Presidency of Ziaur Rahman, 1977 to 1981. Jatiya Party (Ershad)
The Jatiya Party ( bn, জাতীয় পার্টি, translit=Jatiyo Party, lit=National Party) is a conservative, nationalist political party in Bangladesh and is currently the main opposition in the Jatiya Sangsad, against the Awami League. The current chairman of the party is Ghulam Muhammad Quader. On 3 January 2019, the party announced its decision to join the Bangladesh Awami League-led Grand Alliance after having been in opposition for the previous parliamentary term. Lt. Gen. Hussain Muhammad Ershad ( bn, হুসেইন মুহাম্মদ এরশাদ; 1 February 1930 – 14 July 2019) was a Bangladeshi Army Chief politician who served as the President of Bangladesh from 1983 to 1990, a time many consider to have been a military dictatorship. He seized power as head of the army during a bloodless coup against President Abdus Sattar on 24 March 1982 (by imposing martial law and suspending the Constitution). He declared himself President in 1983, and subsequently won the controversial 1986 Bangladeshi presidential election.
