Elizabethan Sea Dogs
The Sea Dogs were a group of English privateers and explorers authorised by Queen Elizabeth I to raid England's enemies, whether they were formally at war with them or not. Active from 1560 until Elizabeth's death in 1603, the Sea Dogs primarily attacked Spanish targets both on land and at sea, particularly during the Anglo-Spanish War. Sea-Doo is a Canadian brand of personal watercraft (PWC) and boats manufactured by Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP). All Sea-Doo models are driven by an impeller-driven waterjet. All Sea-Doo PWC models are produced at BRP's plants in Querétaro and Juárez, Mexico. Its Rotax engines are produced at BRP's plant in Gunskirchen, Austria. In 2016, Sea-Doo had a 45.8% share of the PWC market in the US. History Bombardier introduced its first personal watercraft in 1968, called the Bombardier Sea-Doo. It was designed by Clayton Jacobson II, who would later develop the more successful Kawasaki Jet Ski watercraft. Also heavily involved was Bombardier's Laurent Beaudoin, who was interested in expanding the success of the Ski-Doo snowmobile to the PWC market. SEADOG Pump
Independent Natural Resources, Inc. or INRI is an American IP holding company based in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. It formed Renew Blue in Dallas as a wholly owned subsidiary charged with licensing the SEADOG pump. The SEADOG Pump is an ocean-wave energy technology patented by Independent Natural Resources Inc. (INRI) and invented by Kenneth W. Welch, Jr. The pump rises and falls with ocean swells, effectively capturing the energy in the ocean waves, to pump seawater to a land-based elevated holding tank. Once in the tank, the potential energy of the water can be used to drive hydroelectric generators, to generate electricity or desalinate water. The technology was tested in the Gulf of Mexico with results validated by Texas A&M University at Galveston. Fog Bow
A fog bow, sometimes called a white rainbow, is a similar phenomenon to a rainbow; however, as its name suggests, it appears as a bow in fog rather than rain. Because of the very small size of water droplets that cause fog—smaller than —the fog bow has only very weak colors, with a red outer edge and bluish inner edge. The colors fade due to being smeared out by the diffraction effect of the smaller droplets. In many cases, when the droplets are very small, fog bows appear white, and are therefore sometimes called ''white rainbows''. Along with its larger angular size, this lack of color is a feature of a fog bow that distinguishes it from a glory, which has multiple pale-colored rings caused by diffraction. This is a list of current and former Major League Baseball mascots, sorted alphabetically. The tradition in the Major League Baseball mascot began with Mr. Met, introduced for the New York Mets when Shea Stadium opened in 1964. Although some mascots came and went over time, the popularity of mascots increased when the San Diego Chicken started independently making appearances at San Diego Padres games in 1977. Philadelphia Phillies management felt they needed a mascot similar to the Chicken, so they debuted the Phillie Phanatic in 1978. Sharks are a group of elasmobranch cartilaginous fish characterized by a ribless endoskeleton, dermal denticles, five to seven gill slits on each side, and pectoral fins that are not fused to the head. A sailor, seaman, mariner, or seafarer is a person who works aboard a watercraft as part of its crew, and may work in any one of a number of different fields that are related to the operation and maintenance of a ship. Wilson Starbuck (December 25, 1897 – December 27, 1983) was an American writer, sailor, and United States Navy officer known for his written works involving life at sea. He is best known for creating the World War II comic strip ''Navy Bob Steele'' which was published by the McClure Newspaper Syndicate from 1939 to 1945, and for his play ''Sea Dogs'' which was staged on Broadway in 1939. Life and career Wilson Starbuck was born in Newark, New Jersey, on December 25, 1897. He served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy during World War I, and also worked as a sailor aboard a freighter. His experiences at sea informed his writing. He penned the children's book ''Liners and Freighters'' (1934, Thomas Nelson & Sons) which included a collection of short stories aimed at educating middle school students about commerce and transportation at sea.
