Salon Of 1822
The Salon of 1822 was an art exhibition held at the Louvre in Paris, opening on 24 April 1822. The Salon took place every two or three years at the time and featured paintings and sculpture. One of the most notable works to be displayed was ''The Barque of Dante'' by the romantic painter Eugène Delacroix, which owed much to Théodore Géricault's ''The Raft of the Medusa'' which had appeared at the previous Salon of 1819. Taking place during the Restoration era, it was the last to be held during the reign of Louis XVIII. The Salon of 1824 took place after his brother Charles X had succeeded to the throne. The Salon was notable for a boycott by Horace Vernet. After two of his paintings '' The Gate at Clichy'' and '' The Battle of Jemappes'' were rejected by the authorities as their theme depicting battles of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic eras due to being potentially subversive he withdrew all his other paintings from the exhibition barring one, the royal commission ''Joseph V ... Art Exhibition
An art exhibition is traditionally the space in which art objects (in the most general sense) meet an audience. The exhibit is universally understood to be for some temporary period unless, as is rarely true, it is stated to be a "permanent exhibition". In American English, they may be called "exhibit", "exposition" (the French word) or "show". In UK English, they are always called "exhibitions" or "shows", and an individual item in the show is an "exhibit". Such expositions may present pictures, drawings, video, sound, installation, performance, interactive art, new media art or sculptures by individual artists, groups of artists or collections of a specific form of art. The art works may be presented in museums, art halls, art clubs or private art galleries, or at some place the principal business of which is not the display or sale of art, such as a coffeehouse. An important distinction is noted between those exhibits where some or all of the works are for sale, normal ... La Barrière De Clichy
''The Barrière de Clichy. Defence of Paris, 30 March 1814'' is an oil-on-canvas painting by Horace Vernet from 1820. It shows a battle against Russian cossacks at the barrière de Clichy (part of the Battle of Paris), highlighting the soldiers present but not engaged in fighting. Vernet's participation in this battle marked his only experience in active combat, which influenced his choice of subject matter for the remainder of his career. The painting was commissioned by the goldsmith Jean-Baptiste-Claude Odiot, who, like Vernet, fought in the battle under Bon-Adrien Jeannot de Moncey. Gros studied under Jacques-Louis David in Paris and began an independent artistic career during the French Revolution. Forced to leave France, Gros moved to Genoa. Fleury François Richard
Fleury François Richard (25 February 1777, Lyon – 14 March 1852, Écully), sometimes called Fleury-Richard, was a French painter of the École de Lyon. A student of Jacques-Louis David, Fleury-Richard and his friend Pierre Révoil were precursors of the Troubador style. Life The son of a magistrate, Fleury François Richard studied at the collège de l'Oratoire in Lyon then at the école de Dessin under Alexis Grognard. At the latter he met Pierre Révoil. In 1796 he joined the Paris studio of Jacques-Louis David. His first paintings had major success and he mingled with the Paris intelligentsia, among whom the Troubador style was highly favoured. He became the favourite painter of empress Joséphine de Beauharnais, who bought many of his paintings, so that the European renown gained by his first works was recognised by Madame de Staël. In 1808 he set up his own studio at the palais Saint-Pierre at Lyon, having been granted it by the city for the benefits he had brought to ... Montaigne Visiting Torquato Tasso In Prison (Richard)
''Montaigne Visiting Torquato Tasso in Prison'' (French: ''Le Tasse en prison visité par Montaigne'' or ''Le Tasse et Montaigne'') is an oil on canvas painting by French painter Fleury François Richard, created in 1821. It was acquired by the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon, in 1822, at the request of baron Rambaud, mayor of Lyon. It was first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1822. It is one of the artist's last paintings, showing Torquato Tasso being visited by Montaigne while in prison. History Contrary to what the title implies, Tasso was not imprisoned. He was actually locked up in a hospital for the insane in Ferrara, Italy, the Ospedale di Sant' Anna, due to a mental illness. The fact that the hospital here takes the appearance of a chapel shows the little importance that the artist gives to the conditions of Tasso's confinement as well as to the historical context of the situation: what matters is the condition of the character, both physical and psychological, and the repre ... The Duchess Of Berry Presenting The Duke Of Bordeaux
''The Duchess of Berry Presenting the Duke of Bordeaux'' (French: ''La duchesse de Berry présente le duc de Bordeaux'') is an 1821 history painting by the French artist Charles-Nicolas Lafond. It portrays the moment that the widowed Duchess of Berry presents her young son the Duke of Bordeaux to the French court. The assembled crowd, led by the boy's great uncle Louis XVIII, respond with delight. The Duke of Berry had been assassinated by a Bonapartist at the Paris Opera in February 1820. Seven month's later his wife gave birth to a son, considered a miracle baby as it seemed to secure the succession of the House of Bourbon for another generation. Amongst others depicted are the future Charles X of France, Marie Thérèse of France, the Duke of Angoulême, the Prince of Condé and Talleyrand. Richard Parkes Bonington
Richard Parkes Bonington (25 October 1802 – 23 September 1828) was an English Romantic landscape painter, who moved to France at the age of 14 and can also be considered as a French artist, and an intermediary bringing aspects of English style to France. Becoming, after his early death, one of the most influential British artists of his time, the facility of his style was inspired by the old masters, yet was entirely modern in its application. His landscapes were mostly of coastal scenes, with a low horizon and large sky, showing a brilliant handling of light and atmosphere. He also painted small historical cabinet paintings in a freely-handled version of the troubadour style. Life and work Richard Parkes Bonington was born in the town of Arnold, four miles from Nottingham."Arnold" in ''Chambers's Encyclopædia''. London: George Newnes, 1961, Vol. 1, p. 633. Paul Delaroche
Hippolyte-Paul Delaroche (17 July 1797 – 4 November 1856) was a French painter who achieved his greater successes painting historical scenes. He became famous in Europe for his melodramatic depictions that often portrayed subjects from English and French history. The emotions emphasised in Delaroche's paintings appeal to Romanticism while the detail of his work along with the deglorified portrayal of historic figures follow the trends of Academicism and Neoclassicism. Delaroche aimed to depict his subjects and history with pragmatic realism. He did not consider popular ideals and norms in his creations, but rather painted all his subjects in the same light whether they were historical figures like Marie-Antoinette, figures of Christianity, or people of his time like Napoleon Bonaparte. Delaroche was a leading pupil of Antoine-Jean Gros and later mentored a number of notable artists such as Thomas Couture, Jean-Léon Gérôme, and Jean-François Millet. Delaroche was born int ... Gold Medal
A gold medal is a medal awarded for highest achievement in a non-military field. Its name derives from the use of at least a fraction of gold in form of plating or alloying in its manufacture. Since the eighteenth century, gold medals have been awarded in the arts, for example, by the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, usually as a symbol of an award to give an outstanding student some financial freedom. Others offer only the prestige of the award. Many organizations now award gold medals either annually or extraordinarily, including various academic societies. While some gold medals are solid gold, others are gold-plated or silver-gilt, like those of the Olympic Games, the Lorentz Medal, the United States Congressional Gold Medal and the Nobel Prize medal. Nobel Prize medals consist of 18 karat green gold plated with 24 karat gold. Before 1980 they were struck in 23 karat gold. Military origins Before the establishment of standard military awards, e.g., the Medal of ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Joseph Vernet Tied To A Mast During A Storm
''Joseph Vernet Tied to a Mast During a Storm'' (French: ''Joseph Vernet attaché à un mât étudie les effets de la tempête'') is an 1822 history painting by the French artist Horace Vernet. It depicts a famous, possibly apocryphal, incident from the life of the artist's grandfather the marine painter Joseph Vernet who lashed himself to the mast of a ship in order to witness the effects of a storm. He had received a commission from Louis XV to paint a series of pictures depicting the ports of France and after departing Italy had run into a violent storm. As a rising artist Horace Vernet promoted his connection with his celebrated grandfather but quickly developed a reputation as a prolific and versatile painter in his own right. When a government-commissioned painting from Théodore Géricault fell through, Auguste de Forbin suggested that Vernet should take over the commission with a work depicting his grandfather. Joseph Vernet is show lashed to the foremast of a partial ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
