Royal Castle Of Ciergnon
Ciergnon Castle, or the Royal Castle of Ciergnon (Château Royal de Ciergnon; Koninklijk kasteel van Ciergnon) is a residence and summer retreat of the Monarchy of Belgium, Belgian Royal Family situated near the town of Ciergnon in the municipality of Houyet, province of Namur, Wallonia. The castle is a property of the Royal Trust (Belgium), Belgian Royal Trust. History The domain with its woods, river and vast hunting grounds was acquired in 1840 by King Leopold I of Belgium at the request of his spouse Queen Louise-Marie of France, Louise-Marie. At first a hunting lodge was erected on a beautiful terrace overlooking a deep forested valley. The present château was erected later by King Leopold II of Belgium. The edifice was designed by his court architect Alphonse Balat. Since then it has always served as a holiday retreat to the Royal Family. Ardenne Castle or the Royal Castle of Ardenne (french: Château Royal d'Ardenne, nl, Koninklijk Kasteel van Ardenne, formerly also spelled "Hardenne") was a former residence and summer retreat of the Belgian royal family situated in the municipality of Houyet, Namur Province, Wallonia. It served as a luxury hotel from 1891 to 1949 and burned down in 1969. History Royal Residence On 21 March 1837, King Leopold I bought of land called "Terre d'Hardenne et de Férage". In this domain, crossed by the Lesse and the Ywoigne, he had a rock tower built (1843) and extended an existing hunting lodge with two towers.
