Roman Catholicism In Morocco
The Catholic Church in Morocco is part of the worldwide Catholic Church (particularly the Latin Church), under the spiritual leadership of the Pope in Rome. Catholics account for only about .07% of the overall population of over 31 million. The country is divided into two archdioceses; Rabat and Tangier. Demographics There are around 50,000 Catholics in Morocco; most of them are European expatriates, with a big majority of French and Spanish from colonization and post-independence. The second group is composed of Sub-Saharan immigrants, mainly students. Aside from Arabic, all of the Europeans can speak Spanish and French, which are also spoken by Catholic Arabs, Berbers, and Moors, and these languages are used in the celebration of Mass, in prayer meetings, and in education. There are also converts from Islam, the dominant religion and when they exist, they keep their faith secret. Church Of Saint Andrew, Tangier
The Church of Saint Andrew is an Anglican church in Tangier, Morocco. Consecrated in 1905, the church is within the Archdeaconry of Gibraltar. The building is constructed in a Moorish architectural style. History In 1880, Hassan I of Morocco donated land to the British community in order to build a small Anglican church in Tangier. The resulting church was soon found to have insufficient capacity for the increasing number of worshippers, and a new building was constructed in 1894 which became the Church of Saint Andrew. It was consecrated in 1905. The interior is designed as a fusion of numerous styles, notably Moorish. The belltower, shaped like a minaret, overlooks the adjacent cemetery. Henri Matisse's painting of 1913, ''Landscape Viewed from a Window'', depicts the church. The church has a number of memorial plaques, including one to commemorate Emily Keene, (1849-1944), Sherifa of Wazzan, who introduced the cholera vaccine to Morocco. The Church of the Immaculate Conception, also known as the Spanish Church or ''La Purísima'', is a Roman Catholic church located in Tangier, Morocco. Overview The church is located on Rue Es-Siaghine, just west of the Petit Socco square at the center of the Tangier medina. It was built in 1880-1881 on the former ground of the Swedish legation, which had been established there in 1788. It was designed by architect on the initiative of Spanish Franciscan father . It was complemented in 1892-93 by the edification of a clock tower, originally topped with a spire and later changed to the present-day cupola. The church used to serve the whole city's Christian community, including European diplomats. More recently, the property has been used by the Missionaries of Charity who in 1996 altered its interior, partitioning the former church nave into two floors. Background The Franciscans had a longstanding presence in Morocco, in line with their early tradition of engagement with the Muslim world going back to the famed encounter between Francis of Assisi and Sultan Al-Kamil at Damietta in 1219. For a long time, the only Catholic place of worship in all of Morocco was a Franciscan chapel on the side of the Spanish consulate building near the Petit Socco of Tangier. Casablanca Cathedral (, french: Cathédrale de Casablanca), or Church of the Sacred Heart (, french: Église du Sacré-Cœur), is a former Roman Catholic church located in Casablanca, Morocco. History The Casablanca church was constructed in 1930. The cathedral ceased its religious function in 1956, after the independence of Morocco.
