Pompei (; nap, Pumpeje, ) or Pompeii (, as in the name of the ancient city) is a city and commune in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Italy, home of the ancient Roman ruins of Pompeii that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Carlo Cremonesi
Carlo Cremonesi (4 November 1866 – 25 November 1943) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church who served as Territorial Prelate of Pompei from 1926 to 1928, and was elevated to the cardinalate in 1935. Biography Cremonesi was born in Rome, and there studied at the Pontifical Roman Seminary before being ordained to the priesthood on 21 June 1890. He then taught literature at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome until 1909. Once private secretary to Cardinal Luigi Galimberti, he was also a canon of the chapter of Sant'Angelo in Pescheria, and was raised to the rank of an Honorary Chamberlain on 22 May 1898. Cremonesi served as notary for the processes of the candidates to become Italian bishops, and later as Secretary of the Pontifical Commission for Works of Religion from 1909 to 1921. Francesco Saverio Toppi (26 June 1925 – 2 April 2007) - born ''Vincenzo Toppi'' - was an Italian Capuchin who served as the Prelate of Pompei from 1990 until his resignation in 2001. Toppi fostered a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother and this devotion further developed and was solidified when he was appointed to oversee the Marian shrine in the Pompei prelature. He carried out his duties to the fullest as a teacher serving in Palermo and Naples prior to his episcopal appointment and served in various capacities of leadership for his order. Toppi's reputation for holiness and his rapport with the faithful led to calls after his death for his cause of beatification to be introduced and the cause was introduced on 3 October 2013 titling Toppi as a Servant of God. Domenico Sorrentino (born 16 May 1948) is an Italian Catholic prelate and the current Bishop of Assisi-Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino since his appointment in 2005. Biography He was born at Boscoreale, near Torre Annunziata and Pompei, outside Naples in Italy, in 1948. He undertook the usual seminary studies and was ordained a Catholic priest for the Diocese of Nola on 24 June 1972, having studied at the Roman ecclesiastical universities as a pupil of the Almo Collegio Capranica, an ancient Roman seminary named after Cardinal Domenico Capranica.
