Robbery Under Arms (1907 MacMahon Film)
''Robbery Under Arms'' is a 1907 Australian silent western/drama film based on the 1888 novel by Rolf Boldrewood about two brothers and their relationship with the bushranger Captain Starlight. It was the first film version of the novel and the third Australian feature ever made. It is considered a lost film, and is not to be confused with another version of the novel that came out the same year. Synopsis Key scenes of the film included the branding of the stolen cattle by the Marstons, the stealing of the horse 'Marquis of Lorne', the capture of Starlight and Dick Marston, the robbery of the mail coach, the bail up of the gold escort, the sticking up of Whitmans', the attack on Keightley station, the ride of Mrs Keightley to raise the ransom, the escape from Berrima Gaol and Starlight's last stand. Charles MacMahon (theatre)
The MacMahon brothers were entrepreneurs in Australian show business. Chief among them were James MacMahon (1856 or c. 1858 – 29 April 1915) and Charles MacMahon (1861 – 27 June 1917), who together and separately toured a large number of stage shows. Their younger brothers, Joseph (died November 1918) and William (died August 1923), were involved in many of those activities. In later years James acquired the nickname "Mighty Atom", perhaps a reference to Marie Corelli's novel. and Charles had some success as a filmmaker. ''The Referee'' was a newspaper published in Sydney, Australia from 1886 to 1939. History ''The Referee'' was first published on 20 October 1886 as ''The Sydney Referee'' by Edward Lewis. In 1933 it absorbed '' The Arrow''. It ceased on 31 August 1939. In 1887 Nat Gould started work as "Verax", horse-racing editor for the paper, which published in serial form his first novel, ''With the Tide'', followed by his next five. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), known as ScreenSound Australia from 1999 to 2004, is Australia's audiovisual archive, responsible for developing, preserving, maintaining, promoting and providing access to a national collection of film, television, sound, radio, video games, new media, and related documents and artefacts. The collection ranges from works created in the late nineteenth century when the recorded sound and film industries were in their infancy, to those made in the present day. The NFSA collection first started as the National Historical Film and Speaking Record Library (within the then Commonwealth National Library) in 1935, becoming an independent cultural organisation in 1984. ''The Barrier Miner'' was a daily broadsheet newspaper published in Broken Hill in far western New South Wales from 1888 to 1974. History First published on 28 February 1888, ''The Barrier Miner'' was published continuously until 25 November 1974. Copies are available on microfilm and online via Trove Digitised Newspapers. The paper was revived briefly in 2005; an index to births deaths and marriages has been prepared which also notes additional publication dates between 16 December 2005 and 31 July 2008. The paper closed down for a second time in 2008 with the managing director, Margaret McBride stating that "...due to commercial reasons the paper would no longer service Broken Hill and the region...".
