Richard Ryder (19th Century Politician)
Richard Ryder (5 July 1766 – 18 September 1832) was a British Tory politician. He notably served as Home Secretary between 1809 and 1812. Background Ryder was a younger son of Nathaniel Ryder, 1st Baron Harrowby and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of the Right Reverend Richard Terrick, Bishop of London. Dudley Ryder, 1st Earl of Harrowby, was his elder brother and the Right Reverend the Hon. Henry Ryder, Bishop of Coventry and of Lichfield, his younger brother. He was educated at St John's College, Cambridge. Political career Ryder sat as Member of Parliament for Tiverton from 1795 to 1830 and was sworn of the Privy Council in 1807. From 1809 to 1812 he served as Home Secretary under Spencer Perceval. Family Ryder married in 1799 Frederica, daughter of Sir John Skynner, from whom Ryder inherited the Great House in Great Milton, Oxfordshire in 1805. ''The Right Honourable'' ( abbreviation: ''Rt Hon.'' or variations) is an honorific style traditionally applied to certain persons and collective bodies in the United Kingdom, the former British Empire and the Commonwealth of Nations. Tiverton (UK Parliament Constituency)
Tiverton was a constituency located in Tiverton in east Devon, formerly represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Enfranchised as a parliamentary borough in 1615 and first represented in 1621, it elected two Members of Parliament (MPs) by the first past the post system of election until 1885. The name was then transferred to a county constituency electing one MP. (Between 1885 and 1918, the constituency was alternatively called Devon, North East.) In 1997, it was merged with the neighbouring constituency of Honiton to form the Tiverton and Honiton constituency. Granville Ryder (1799–1879)
The Honourable Granville Dudley Ryder JP (26 November 1799 – 24 November 1879), was a British Tory politician. Ryder was the second son of Dudley Ryder, 1st Earl of Harrowby, and his wife, the former Lady Susanna Leveson-Gower, daughter of Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Marquess of Stafford. A graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge, he served in the Royal Navy and achieved the rank of Lieutenant. He later sat as Member of Parliament for Tiverton from 1830 to 1832 and for Hertfordshire from 1841 to 1847. He also served as a Justice of the Peace for Hertfordshire. Ryder married his first cousin, Lady Georgiana Augusta, daughter of Henry Somerset, 6th Duke of Beaufort, in 1825. They had seven daughters and six sons. Their eldest son, Dudley Henry Ryder, was an ancestor of the 20th-century soldier and politician Robert Ryder. Their second son, Granville Ryder, was a politician. Dudley Ryder, 2nd Earl of Harrowby, KG, PC, FRS (19 May 179819 November 1882), styled Viscount Sandon between 1809 and 1847, was a British politician. He held office under Lord Palmerston as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in 1855 and as Lord Privy Seal between 1855 and 1858. Background and education Harrowby was born in London, the son of Dudley Ryder, 1st Earl of Harrowby, and Lady Susan (d. 1838), daughter of Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Marquess of Stafford. He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford. He was an officer of the Staffordshire Yeomanry, resigning his captain's commission in March 1831. Political career Harrowby was elected Member of Parliament for Tiverton in 1819, a seat he held until 1831 before switching to represent Liverpool until 1847. William Fitzhugh (MP)
William Fitzhugh (August 24, 1741June 6, 1809) was an American planter, legislator and patriot during the American Revolutionary War who served as a delegate to the Continental Congress for Virginia in 1779, as well as many terms in the House of Burgesses and both houses of the Virginia General Assembly following the Commonwealth's formation. His Stafford County home, Chatham Manor, is on the National Register for Historic Places and serves as the National Park Service Headquarters for the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park.
