Richard Head, 2nd Viscount Head
Richard Head, 2nd Viscount Head (born 1937) is a retired British racehorse trainer. Head was active as a trainer in Upper Lambourn from 1968 to 1983 and gained his biggest successes with the horses Uncle Bing and Border Incident. Uncle Bing won the Topham Trophy in 1980, while Border Incident's major wins included the Jim Ford Challenge Cup and the Rehearsal Chase. Head retired from training after succeeding his father as Viscount Head in 1983 and later held positions as chairman of Wincanton Racecourse and on the board at Salisbury Racecourse. He also made occasional speeches in the House of Lords. Upper Lambourn
Upper Lambourn is a small village in the county of Berkshire, England. The village is situated in the civil parish of Lambourn , and is 1.2 miles (2 km) to the north-west of the village of Lambourn, just off the Lambourn to Shrivenham road. The parish is within the district of West Berkshire, close to the point where the counties of Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Wiltshire meet. Border Incident (horse)
Border Incident was a British-bred racehorse who first developed into a high class novice hurdler, then later became one of the best steeplechasers of his generation. He had a tendency to break blood vessels and was plagued by injury throughout his career which limited his racecourse appearances. He was physically strong in appearance though often sweated up before his races. He was trained throughout his career by Richard Head at Rhonehurst Stables, in Upper Lambourn, Berkshire, England. Background Foaled in 1970, Border Incident was sired by the very useful flat middle distance runner Border Chief, who became a successful National Hunt sire. Jim Ford Challenge Cup
The Jim Ford Challenge Cup was a National Hunt Listed chase in England. It was run at Wincanton over a distance of 3 miles and 1½ furlongs (5,130 metres), and it was scheduled to take place each year in February, on the same card as the Kingwell Hurdle. The race was last run in 2008 having been turned into a handicap in 2006. During the eighties and early nineties the race regularly featured contests between David Elsworth's locally trained horses (Combs Ditch, Desert Orchid, Cavvies Clown, Lesley Ann) attempting to preserve local honour in the face of invasion by the big battalions from Lambourn (Burrough Hill Lad, Brown Chamberlin, Diamond Edge) and Yorkshire (Bregawn, Silver Buck). Wincanton Racecourse
Wincanton Racecourse is a thoroughbred horse racing venue located in Wincanton, Somerset, England. The steeplechase fences are large, making it a good test of a chaser. Three fences in quick succession in the second half of the home-straight make for exciting racing and often change the complexion of a finish dramatically; resulting in a great many close finishes. The track stages several big races, including the Kingwell Hurdle in February. The CGA Chase (previously the Jim Ford Challenge Cup, last run in 2012) was run on the same day; these races were significant trials for the Champion Hurdle and Cheltenham Gold Cup respectively. Salisbury Racecourse
Salisbury Racecourse is a flat racecourse in the United Kingdom featuring thoroughbred horse racing, southwest of Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. Fifteen race meetings a year are held there between early May and mid-October. History Racing at the track, located three miles from Salisbury, has taken place since the mid-16th century.
