In mathematics, particularly in the fields of number theory and combinatorics, the rank of a partition of a positive integer is a certain integer associated with the partition. In fact at least two different definitions of rank appear in the literature. In number theory, a Durfee square is an attribute of an integer partition. A partition of ''n'' has a Durfee square of size ''s'' if ''s'' is the largest number such that the partition contains at least ''s'' parts with values ≥ ''s''. An equivalent, but more visual, definition is that the Durfee square is the largest square that is contained within a partition's Ferrers diagram. The term was first introduced without a definition by Freeman Dyson in a 1944 paper published in Eureka, a journal published by the Mathematics Society of Cambridge University. Dyson then gave a list of properties this yet-to-be-defined quantity should have. In 1988, George E. Andrews and Frank Garvan discovered a definition for the crank satisfying the properties hypothesized for it by Dyson. Srinivasa Ramanujan (; born Srinivasa Ramanujan Aiyangar, ; 22 December 188726 April 1920) was an Indian mathematician.
