Rancho, Aruba
Rancho is a former fishing village and neighbourhood of Oranjestad, Aruba. In the late 20th century, it was annexed by Oranjestad. History Rancho was first mentioned in 1855 as a fishing village with small huts located in the vicinity of the Oranjestad The village had a little harbour where ships used to anchor for Oranjestad. In 1928, Arend Petroleum Maatschappij, a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell, opened an oil refinery near Rancho which resulted in a population increase and the construction of stone houses. Rancho and Oranjestad merged into a single urban area, and in the late 20th century it was annexed. In order to preserve the village characteristics, buildings are limited to a height of five metres unless an exception is granted. Rancho has become an impoverished part of the city. Aruba
Aruba ( , , ), officially the Country of Aruba ( nl, Land Aruba; pap, Pais Aruba) is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands physically located in the mid-south of the Caribbean Sea, about north of the Venezuela peninsula of Paraguaná and northwest of Curaçao. Oranjestad ( , , ; literally "Orange City") is the capital and largest city of Aruba, a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It is located on the southern coast near the western end of the island country. In the local language, Papiamento, Oranjestad is often referred to as "Playa". Boy Ecury
Boy Ecury (23 April 1922 – 6 November 1944) was a member of the Dutch Resistance in World War II. Biography He was born in Oranjestad, Aruba, an island of the Dutch Antilles in a large family. Ecury was born the seventh of thirteen children. His father was a wealthy businessman. His given name was Segundo Jorge Adelberto Ecury, but he went by the nickname Boy and it is by that name that he is remembered. After a brief stint at a military academy in Puerto Rico, together with his brother, he was sent to study in the Netherlands. Ecury graduated in 1937 with a diploma in commerce from the Brother of St. Louis School in Oudenbosch, and he did a lot of travelling around the Netherlands. He lived there when World War II started in 1939 and witnessed first hand the Nazi invasion in 1940. Nydia Ecury
Nydia Ecury (2 February 19262 March 2012) was a celebrated Aruban-Dutch writer, translator and actress. She published five collections of poetry and translated plays of major European and American playwrights into the Papiamentu language, helping to develop the native dialect into a cultural language. The recipient of numerous awards, including the Chapi di Plata literary prize, Ecury was honored as a knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau.
