Clarens, Free State
Clarens is a small town situated in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains in the Free State province of South Africa and nicknamed the "Jewel of the Eastern Free State". It was established in 1912 and named after the town of Clarens in Switzerland where exiled Paul Kruger spent his last days. It is situated 336 km from Johannesburg, 284 km from Bloemfontein, 389 km from Durban. History A farm called "Leliehoek" (English: Lily Corner) was bought from Hermanus Steyn in 1910, and in 1911 Piet de Villiers sold his farm "Naauwpoort" (situated near the Titanic rock) to a company wanting to establish a village there. These two farms were divided into erven and sold for fifty pounds each. A commission was appointed in 1912 to finalize negotiations, and a decision was made to name the village "Clarens" in honour of President Paul Kruger’s influence in the area. Fouriesburg
Fouriesburg is a small town situated at the junction of the R711 and R26 routes in the eastern Free State, South Africa. It is near the Maluti Mountains and only 10 km from Caledon's Poort border post, which gives access to Lesotho. History During the late nineteenth century, this land was donated to the Orange Free State by a local farmer of Huguenot descent, Christoffel Fourie, for use as a temporary capital during the Second Boer War. It was the site of several engagements during the Boer War, and by 1902 the original settlement had been almost completely destroyed. Vicinity A small private resort, Meiringskloof Nature Park, is located in a valley just northeast of town. Route The R712's eastern terminus is a junction with the R74 approximately 9 kilometres south of Harrismith. From there, it heads west-south-west for 29 kilometres to cross the R57 just north of Phuthaditjhaba (adjacent to the University of the Free State Qwaqwa campus). From the R57 intersection, it runs west for 48 kilometres, through the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, to reach Clarens, where it meets the northern terminus of the R711. Golden Gate Highlands National Park
Golden Gate Highlands National Park is located in Free State, South Africa, near the Lesotho border. It covers an area of . The park's most notable features are its golden, ochre, and orange-hued, deeply eroded sandstone cliffs and outcrops, especially the Brandwag rock. Another feature of the area is the numerous caves and shelters displaying San rock paintings. Wildlife featured at the park includes mongooses, eland, zebras, and over 100 bird species. It is the Free State's only national park, and is more famous for the beauty of its landscape than for its wildlife. Numerous paleontology finds have been made in the park, including dinosaur eggs and skeletons. R26 Road (South Africa)
The R26 is a provincial route in Free State, South Africa that connects Zastron with Villiers via Bethlehem. Route The R26 begins in the town of Rouxville, at a t-junction with the N6 National Route. It begins by going north-east for 30 kilometres to meet the north-western terminus of the R726 Road and bypass the town of Zastron. From Zastron, the R26 goes northwards for 65 kilometres, following the borderline with Lesotho, through Van Stadensrus, to the town of Wepener near the Van Rooyen's Gate border with Lesotho, where it meets the R702 Road. The R702 & R26 become one road for a few kilometres westwards. Just after crossing the Caledon River, at the northern terminus of the R701 Road (a four-way junction), the R702 remains on the road westwards while the R26 turns northwards.
