Richard Gregg (field Hockey)
Richard George Stanhope Gregg (9 December 1883 – 20 May 1945) was an Irish field hockey player born in Portsmouth, England. He played for, amongst others, Three Rock Rovers and Ireland. Field hockey was introduced at the Olympic Games as a men's competition at the 1908 Games in London, with six teams, four from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and other two were France and Germany. History Field hockey was removed from the Summer Olympic Games at the 1924 Paris Games because of the lack of an international sporting structure. The International Hockey Federation (FIH, ''Fédération Internationale de Hockey'') was founded in Paris that year as a response to field hockey's omission. The England men's national field hockey team competes in most major international tournaments except the Olympic Games. England's only appearance at the Olympics was at London 1908 when they won gold; since then English players have competed at the Olympics as part of the combined Great Britain national field hockey team. England's best finish in the Hockey World Cup was as runners-up to champions Australia in 1986, which was also held in London.
