Reynst Family
The Reijnst family was a family of soldiers and politicians in the Dutch Republic. Their surname was also spelled Reynst or Rijnst. The family played an important role in the Dutch East India Company, the Navy, Amsterdam government and as Art collectors. The family owned the Reynst collection from which the Dutch Gift came. History The origins of the family can be found in the 15th century when they were merchants in the city of Amsterdam. After the Alteratie of Amsterdam (1578) the Reynst came into government where the family achieved huge influence and prestige during the Golden Age period. J.C. Reijnst (1798-1871) was given noble status and the rank of jonkheer or jonkvrouw in 1840. This branch became extinct in 1972. Today there are still family members from a non-ennobled branch. Lambert Reynst
Lambert Reynst (1613–1679) was a Dutch regent and politician of the Golden Age. Born in Amsterdam, he belonged to the "republican" Dutch States Party. Family He came from the patrician Reynst family and was the son of Hendrick Reynst and his wife Elisabeth Prinsen. He was also a cousin of the Grand Pensionary Johan de Witt and brother in Law of Cornelis de Graeff and his brother Andries de Graeff, with whom he sat together in the Amsterdam Vroedschap during the Rampjaar 1672. Lambert himself married Alida, daughter of Cornelis Bicker and Aertge Witsen. Life Reynst worked as a lawyer and between 1649 and 1655 was a counsellor for the Dutch Admiralty in the Noorderkwartier. The family lived on Keizersgracht 71. In 1667 he became a 'bewindhebber' or governor of the Dutch East India Company and was made mayor of Amsterdam in 1667, 1668 and 1672. Cornelis Jan Witsen
Cornelis Jansz. Witsen (bapt. 8 September 1605, Amsterdam – 12 March 1669, Amsterdam) was a counsellor and mayor of the city of Amsterdam. He was the father of Nicolaes Witsen and the son of Jan Witsz(en) and Grietje Claes. Biography The Witsen family was involved in the grain trade with Russia. He began his career as captain of the Schutterij and ended it as hoofdschout (head bailiff). In 1655 he was the administrator of the Dutch West India Company and had a seat in the Admiralty of Amsterdam. He was involved in the building of the Lands Zeemagazijn, now the Nederlands Scheepvaartmuseum. As a member of the Admiralty of Amsterdam, in 1656, he was sent with a diplomatic mission to England for talks with Cromwell at the laws on shipping. He took his 15-year-old son with him. Witsen was a great patron of painting and supported the painter Rembrandt through his 1653 financial problems by providing him with a loan to buy a house. Pieter Van Anraedt
Pieter van Anraedt (c.1635 – 13 April 1678) was a Dutch Golden Age painter of history scenes and portraits. Biography Little is known about the circumstances of his life. According to the RKD he was born in Utrecht (city), but trained in Deventer, where he was influenced by Gerard ter Borch. Arnold Houbraken mentions that this painter was very friendly with Jan van der Veen, a poet. He married his daughter Antonia and moved to Amsterdam in the rampjaar 1672, when the French army attacked the city. Then he won a commission to paint the regents of the ''Oudezijds huiszitten'' house on Leprozengracht. This piece was highly admired by Houbraken in 1718, but attributed to Bol, although it is signed and dated. Soon after painting this group portrait, Anraedt returned to Deventer, where he died. Jacob Reynst
Jacob (; ; ar, يَعْقُوب, Yaʿqūb; gr, Ἰακώβ, Iakṓb), later given the name Israel, is regarded as a patriarch of the Israelites and is an important figure in Abrahamic religions, such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Jacob first appears in the Book of Genesis, where he is described as the son of Isaac and Rebecca, and the grandson of Abraham, Sarah, and Bethuel. According to the biblical account, he was the second-born of Isaac's children, the elder being Jacob's fraternal twin brother, Esau. Jacob is said to have bought Esau's birthright and, with his mother's help, deceived his aging father to bless him instead of Esau. Jan Reynst
Jan Reynst (26 October 1601 – 29 June 1646) was a Protestant Dutch merchant in Amsterdam and, with his elder brother Gerrit, an art collector and owner of the Reynst collection. Life Reynst was born in Amsterdam, the son of the merchant Gerard Reynst of the Reynst family, who in the year 1614 became the second Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, and Margrieta Nicquet, whose merchant brother Jacques Nicquet was a fervent art collector. In 1625 Jan went to Venice where he collected antique statuary and Italian paintings and where he was able to purchase the collection - the so called Reynst collection - of 230 sculptures and 140 paintings of the estate Andrea Vendramin in 1629. The United Provinces of the Netherlands, also known as the (Seven) United Provinces, officially as the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands ( Dutch: ''Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden''), and commonly referred to in historiography as the Dutch Republic, was a federal republic that existed from 1579, during the Dutch Revolt, to 1795 (the Batavian Revolution).
