Republican Guard
A republican guard, sometimes called a national guard, is a state organization of a country (often a republic, hence the name ''Republican'') which typically serves to protect the head of state and the government, and thus is often synonymous with a Presidential Guard (other), presidential guard. The term is derived from the original French Republican Guard, French Gendarmerie unit. Several other countries also have adopted the term and have active guard units. Republican Guards may be purely guard of honour, ceremonial units providing close protection to heads of states during functions and parades or be full time protective security units. French Gendarmerie
The National Gendarmerie ( ) is one of two national law enforcement forces of France, along with the National Police. The Gendarmerie is a branch of the French Armed Forces placed under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of the Interior, with additional duties from the Ministry of Armed Forces. Its responsibilities include policing smaller towns, suburbs and rural areas, crowd and riot control, and criminal investigation, including cybercrime. By contrast, the National Police is a civilian law enforcement agency that is in charge of policing cities and larger towns. Yemeni Republican Guard
The Yemeni Republican Guard (YRG; ), formerly known as the Strategic Reserve Forces (), was an elite praetorian guard unit in the Yemen Army. It was formerly commanded by the former President Ali Abdullah Saleh's son, Ahmed Saleh, and was most notably involved in the Yemeni Revolution of 2011, fighting in favour of the Saleh government. The YRG was traditionally relied on as the backbone of Saleh's regime, and was the best armed and trained in the armed forces. Yemen's Defence Ministry both overlooked and engaged in corruption with the YRG in order to ensure the loyalty of the unit's leadership. The Sudanese Republican Guard () is a military unit of the Sudanese Armed Forces responsible for protecting the President of Sudan. It exists as a presidential security unit, which is led by Major General Khalid Hamad. The unit guards the Presidential Palace, and performs honor parades for visiting dignitaries. The Gendarmerie nationale Togolaise (French for the ''Togolese National Gendarmerie'') is a branch of the Togolese Armed Forces. Its 2,710 gendarmes protect people and property in rural areas, control roads and communications and contribute to provide assistance to the population in emergencies. Portuguese National Republican Guard
The National Republican Guard () or GNR is the national gendarmerie force of Portugal. Members of the GNR are military personnel, subject to military law and organisation, unlike the agents of the civilian Polícia de Segurança Pública, Public Security Police (PSP). The GNR is responsible for the preventive police and highway patrol in 94% of Portuguese territory. At national level, GNR also has duties of customs enforcement, coastal control, nature protection, search and rescue operations and state ceremonial guards of honor.
