The Regius Professor of Surgery is a Regius professorship held at the University of Aberdeen. The position was created by Queen Victoria in 1839 and was originally a professorship at Marischal College, until it amalgamated with King's College in 1860 to become the University of Aberdeen. Regius Professor
A Regius Professor is a university professor who has, or originally had, royal patronage or appointment. They are a unique feature of academia in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The first Regius Professorship was in the field of medicine, and founded by the Scottish King James IV at the University of Aberdeen in 1497. Regius chairs have since been instituted in various universities, in disciplines judged to be fundamental and for which there is a continuing and significant need. Each was established by an English, Scottish, or British monarch, and following proper advertisement and interview through the offices of the university and the national government, the current monarch still appoints the professor (except for those at the University of Dublin in Ireland, which left the United Kingdom in 1922). George Smith (surgeon)
George Smith (1919–1994) was a 20th century Scottish surgeon who emigrated to the United States of America. Life He was born on 4 June 1919 in Carnoustie the son of John Shand Smith and his wife Lilimina Myles Mathers. He was educated at the Grove Academy. He then studied Medicine at St. Andrews University graduating MB ChB in 1942, and starting as an intern at Dundee Royal Infirmary. In the Second World War he served as surgeon Lieutenant with the Royal Navy. In 1945 he was created a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). In 1959 he became Chairman of the St Andrews Medical School and in 1960 became Professor of Surgery at the University of Aberdeen. In 1967 he was elected a member of the Harveian Society of Edinburgh.< From 1974 to 1978 he also was Director of the Institute of Environmental and Offshore Medicine (linked to the oil industry).

Sir John Marnoch (23 May 1867 – 2 February 1936) was a Scottish surgeon and British Army officer. He was Surgeon to the Royal Household in Scotland, Regius Professor of Surgery at the University of Aberdeen (1909 to 1932), and President of the Aberdeen Medico-Chirurgical Society (1909 to 1910). Alexander Ogston
Sir Alexander Ogston MD CM LLD (19 April 1844 – 1 February 1929) was a British surgeon, famous for his discovery of ''Staphylococcus''. Life Ogston was the eldest son of Amelia Cadenhead and her husband Prof. Francis Ogston (1803–1887), Professor of Medical Jurisprudence at the University of Aberdeen. He had a brother who was also a professor. University of Aberdeen Ogston began his medical training at Marischal College in 1862 and graduated as Bachelor of Medicine and Master of Surgery at the recently united University of Aberdeen in 1865 with honours in medicine and surgery at the age of 21. William Pirie (born 2 April 1949) is a former Scottish footballer who played as a forward. Career Pirie commenced his senior Scottish football career with Huntly FC of the Highland Football League before transferring to his home town Scottish First Division League Club, Aberdeen FC.
