''Reaching for the Sky'' is the second album by soul vocalist Peabo Bryson. Reception Released in 1978, ''Reaching for the Sky'' was Bryson's debut album on Capitol Records, charting with Quiet Storm staple "Feel the Fire" at number 13 on the R&B singles chart. This tune was covered by Stephanie Mills in 1979 on her '' What Cha' Gonna Do with My Lovin''' album and again in 1980 by Teddy Pendergrass as a duet with Mills on his '' TP'' album. The midtempo title track, "Reaching for the Sky", was even more commercially successful, reaching number 6 on the R&B chart. Peabo Bryson
Robert Peapo "Peabo" Bryson ( ; born April 13, 1951) is an American singer and songwriter. He is known for singing soul ballads (often as a duet with female singers) including the hit singles " Tonight, I Celebrate My Love", "You're Looking Like Love To Me" and "As Long As There's Christmas" with Roberta Flack, "A Whole New World" with Regina Belle, and " Beauty and the Beast" with Canadian singer Celine Dion, the latter two being contributions to Disney animated feature soundtracks. Bryson is a winner of two Grammy Awards. Early years Born as Robert Peapo Bryson in Greenville, South Carolina, he spent much of his childhood on his grandfather's farm in Mauldin, South Carolina. Teddy Pendergrass
Theodore DeReese Pendergrass (March 26, 1950 – January 13, 2010) was an American Soul music, soul and R&B singer and songwriter. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pendergrass lived most of his life in the Philadelphia area, and initially rose to musical fame as the lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. After leaving the group in 1976, Pendergrass launched a successful solo career under the Philadelphia International Records, Philadelphia International label, releasing five consecutive platinum albums (a record at the time for an African-American R&B artist). In March 1982, a car crash left Pendergrass paralyzed from the chest down. Pendergrass continued his successful solo career until announcing his retirement in 2007. Johnny Pate
John William Pate (born December 5, 1923) is an American former musician, a jazz bassist who became a producer, arranger, and leading figure in Chicago soul, pop, and rhythm and blues. He learned piano and tuba as a child and later picked up the bass guitar. He learned arranging while serving in the United States Army. Career The jazz era: Early works Following stints with Coleridge Davis and Stuff Smith in the 1940s, Johnny Pateat Allmusic in 1951, Pate was recording on Chess Records with Eddie South and his Orchestra, credited on bass and arrangements. This was also the first of a series of Chess recordings on which Pate collaborated with saxophonist Eddie Johnson. In the 1950s, he was also a resident arranger for Red Saunders' house band at the Club DeLisa. Recording Johnny Pate's trio recorded for a number of Chicago labels, including Gig and Talisman. Vibraphone
The vibraphone (also called the vibraharp) is a percussion instrument in the metallophone family. It consists of tuned metal bars and is typically played by using Percussion mallet, mallets to strike the bars. A person who plays the vibraphone is called a ''vibraphonist,'' ''vibraharpist,'' or ''vibist''. The vibraphone resembles the Marimbaphone, steel marimba, which it superseded. One of the main differences between the vibraphone and other keyboard percussion instruments is that each bar suspends over a resonator tube containing a flat metal disc. These discs are attached together by a common axle and spin when the motor is turned on. This causes the instrument to produce its namesake tremolo or vibrato effect. The vibraphone also has a sustain pedal similar to a piano. When the pedal is up, the bars produce a muted sound; when the pedal is down, the bars sustain for several seconds or until again muted with the pedal. Morris Jennings was an American drummer and musician from Chicago. He recorded as Moe Jennings, M. The Moog synthesizer ( ) is a modular synthesizer invented by the American engineer Robert Moog in 1964. Moog's company, R. A. Moog Co., produced numerous models from 1965 to 1981, and again from 2014. It was the first commercial synthesizer and established the analog synthesizer concept. Universal Recording Corporation was a recording studio in Chicago founded by Bill Putnam, Sr. for the purpose of investigating new recording techniques and the development of specialized recording equipment. Universal Recording was seminal in the development of experimental studio techniques.
