Radio Tees
Hits Radio Teesside, formerly TFM, is an Independent Local Radio station for Teesside, England, based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The station is owned and operated by Bauer Media Audio UK as part of the Hits Radio network. It broadcasts to areas of County Durham and North Yorkshire. As of September 2024, the station has a weekly audience of 136,000 listeners according to RAJAR. History Radio Tees Radio Tees opened at 6a.m. on Tuesday 24 June 1975, broadcasting on 257 metres medium wave (1,169 kHz) from the converted Water Board buildings at 74 Dovecot Street, Stockton-on-Tees. The first presenter on air was breakfast show host Les Ross and the first record played was "Everything's Tuesday" by Chairmen of the Board. By the autumn of that year, Radio Tees was also broadcasting on 95 VHF – the first local radio station in the area to broadcast on FM. Newcastle upon Tyne, or simply Newcastle ( , Received Pronunciation, RP: ), is a City status in the United Kingdom, cathedral city and metropolitan borough in Tyne and Wear, England. Chairmen of the Board is an American-Canadian, Detroit, Michigan-based soul music group, who saw their greatest commercial success in the 1970s. Recording career General Johnson (1941–2010) had a hit as the lead singer of The Showmen in the early 1960s, with the New Orleans rock and roll anthem "It Will Stand" and Carolina Beach classic "39-21-40 Shape". When Holland-Dozier-Holland left Motown in 1967 to establish their own Invictus/ Hot Wax group of record labels, they teamed Johnson up with Eddie Custis, Danny Woods and Canadian-born Harrison Kennedy as the new company's flagship act, under the name Chairmen of the Board. Alastair Pirrie
Alistair Pirrie ( – 27 January 2017) was a British television and radio presenter, producer and director, well known in the North East England for radio and local TV work, primarily on Radio Tees. He attended Grangefield School, Stockton on Tees. His first break into the music scene came as a young journalist for the New Musical Express (NME) in the early 70s, including a seminal interview with Leonard Cohen in March 1973 at a point when Cohen was debating leaving the industry. However, he is best known nationally in the UK for presenting the ITV Tyne Tees children's television pop music programme '' Razzmatazz'' between 1981 and 1987. The show also provided Lisa Stansfield with an early presenting role. The Northern Echo
''The Northern Echo'' is a regional daily morning newspaper based in the town of Darlington in North East England, serving mainly southern County Durham and northern Yorkshire. The paper covers national as well as regional news. In 2007, its then-editor claimed that it was one of the most famous provincial newspapers in the United Kingdom. Thornaby-on-Tees, commonly referred to as Thornaby, is a town and Civil parishes in England, civil parish in North Yorkshire, England, north of York and south-east of Middlesbrough. On the south bank of the River Tees, Thornaby falls within the Borough of Stockton-on-Tees and the Tees Valley area. The parish had a population of 24,741 at the United Kingdom Census 2011, 2011 census. The town was incorporated as a municipal borough in 1892, during the Victorian era. Great North Radio
Great North Radio, or G.N.R as it was sometimes called, launched in March 1989 using the AM frequencies of Metro Radio and Radio Tees . This happened after the Metro Radio Group decided to split the FM and AM frequencies. The station was broadcast on both frequencies rather than as two separate stations. GNR's output consisted of mellow music from the 1950s through to the 1980s, including current hits that fitted the format. There were also specialist programmes each evening, including Country Music, Jazz, and Classical. GNR was replaced in February 1997 by Magic 1152 and Magic 1170 and was rebranded again in January 2015 when the stations became part of the Greatest Hits Radio network and are known on air as Greatest Hits Radio North East and Greatest Hits Radio Teesside.
