Quicksands (1923 Film)
''Quicksands'' is a 1923 American silent crime drama film directed by Jack Conway, written by Howard Hawks, and starring Helene Chadwick and Richard Dix. The supporting cast features Alan Hale Sr., Noah Beery Sr. and Jean Hersholt. The film was released on February 28, 1923, by American Releasing Corporation. Plot Lt. Brill, a U.S. Army officer assigned to stop a narcotics ring on the Mexico–United States border, breaks up with his girlfriend after discovering her working as a dancer the drug kingpin 'Silent' Krupz's cantina. However, he discovers she is actually an undercover Secret Service agent working with her father Farrell at the U.S. Customs Service. The three are captured by Krupz but are rescued by the Army. Jack Conway (filmmaker)
Hugh Ryan "Jack" Conway (July 17, 1887 – October 11, 1952) was an American film director and film producer, as well as an actor of many films in the first half of the 20th century. Biography He was born as Hugh Ryan Conway, on July 17, 1887, in Graceville, Minnesota, USA. Conway started out as an actor, joining a repertory theater group straight out of high school. He then moved into films, and in 1911, became a member of D.W. Griffith's stock company, appearing primarily in Westerns. Four years later, he made his mark as a director and gained valuable experience at Universal (1916–17 and 1921–23), before moving on to MGM in 1925. Lionel Belmore
Lionel Belmore (12 May 1867 – 30 January 1953) was an English character actor and director on stage for more than a quarter of a century. Life and career Onstage, Belmore appeared with Wilson Barrett, Sir Henry Irving, William Faversham, Lily Langtry, and other famous actors. He entered in films from 1911. Walter Huntley Long (March 5, 1879 – July 4, 1952) was an American character actor in films from the 1910s. Career Born in Nashua, New Hampshire, Long appeared in nearly 200 films. Long debuted in films in 1909 with Broncho Billy Anderson. He disliked the working conditions for making films, so after that project he returned to acting on stage. He appeared in many D. W. Kirkland was born in Savannah, Georgia, the son of former Confederate Brigadier General William Whedbee Kirkland and the older brother of the actress Elizabeth Kirkland, who performed as Odette Tyler. Dick Sutherland
Dick Sutherland (born Archibald Thomas Johnson, December 23, 1881 – February 3, 1934) was an American film actor, active mostly during the silent film era. Born in Benton, Kentucky, in 1881, Sutherland appeared in more than 70 films between 1921 and 1932. Sutherland died at his home in Hollywood, California, from a heart attack, at the age of 52. He was survived by his wife, Verba, and three sons, Harry, Everett, and Lester. He is interred at Inglewood Park Cemetery.
