QWK (file Format)
QWK is a file-based offline mail reader format that was popular among bulletin board system (BBS) users, especially users of FidoNet and other networks that generated large volumes of mail. QWK was originally developed by Mark "Sparky" Herring in 1987 for systems running the popular PCBoard bulletin board system, but it was later adapted for other platforms. Herring died of a myocardial infarction, heart attack in 2020 after being swatting, swatted. Incident is known as 2020 Tennessee swatting. During the height of bulletin board system popularity, several dozen offline mail readers supported the QWK format. PCBoard
PCBoard (PCB) was a bulletin board system (BBS) application first introduced for DOS in 1983 by Fred Clark's Clark Development Company. PCBoard was one of the first commercial BBS packages for DOS systems, and was considered one of the "high end" packages during the rapid expansion of BBS systems in the early 1990s. PCB was used as the basis of some of the largest bulletin board systems of the era, like Canada Remote Systems. PCB was notable for its support of large multi-line BBS systems, which it supported by running multiple copies of the program, either using Computer multitasking, multitasking systems like DESQview or on multiple physical machines using shared storage. A myocardial infarction (MI), commonly known as a heart attack, occurs when Ischemia, blood flow decreases or stops in one of the coronary arteries of the heart, causing infarction (tissue death) to the heart muscle. Swatting
Swatting is a form of criminal harassment that involves deceiving an emergency service (via such means as hoaxing an emergency services dispatcher) into sending a police or emergency response team to another person's location. This is achieved by false reporting of a serious law enforcement emergency, such as a bomb threat, domestic violence, murder, hostage situation, or a false report of a mental health emergency, such as that a person is suicidal or homicidal and armed, among other things. The term is derived from the law enforcement unit SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics), a specialized type of police unit in the United States. It is not related to the verb " to swat". 2020 Tennessee Swatting
On April 27, 2020, a fatal swatting incident occurred in Sumner County, Tennessee. The incident followed an extortion attempt throughout March and April 2020 in which Shane Sonderman and a group of co-conspirators attempted to obtain the Twitter handle "@Tennessee" belonging to 60-year-old Mark Herring. After an unnamed minor in the United Kingdom called local law enforcement to Herring's address, he suffered a fatal heart attack while attempting to leave his home. Sonderman pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy as part of a plea bargain that dropped several other charges. In July 2021, Sonderman was sentenced to 5 years in federal prison and received a $250,000 fine.
