A referendum on the status of the island was held in Puerto Rico on 23 July 1967. The majority of voters voted for Commonwealth status, with a voter turnout of 65.9%. The major pro-statehood party, the Partido Estadista Republicano, boycotted the referendum. As a result of its stance, several dissidents left the party to form the New Progressive Party. Status Quo Movement In Puerto Rico
The status quo movement in Puerto Rico refers to initiatives throughout the history of Puerto Rico aimed at maintaining the current political status of Puerto Rico, that of a commonwealth of the United States. Puerto Rico is currently a territory of the United States. As a Commonwealth, Puerto Rico receives less in federal funding than the states. Residents are US citizens and can vote in territorial and local elections, but do not have the right to vote in presidential or Congressional elections. They receive lower Social Security and Medicare benefits. The Commonwealth and municipal governments of Puerto Rico are prohibited from filing for bankruptcy. In the 2012 Puerto Rican status referendum, 54% of the ballots cast were against the continuation of the island's status as a territory of the US. Guánica (, ) is a town and municipality in southwestern Puerto Rico, bordering the Caribbean Sea, south of Sabana Grande, east of Lajas, and west of Yauco. Villalba (), originally known as Villa Alba, is town and municipality of Puerto Rico located in the central region, northeast of Juana Díaz; south of Orocovis; and west of Coamo.
