The bench press, or chest press, is a weight training exercise in which the trainee presses a weight upwards while lying on a weight training bench. Although the bench press is a full-body exercise, the muscles primarily used are the pectoralis major, the anterior deltoids, and the triceps, among other stabilizing muscles. James Talbot Williams (February 25, 1940 – January 23, 2007) was a record holder professional competitive powerlifter from the United States of America. He competed in powerlifting just prior to the formation of the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF). During the early 1970s he set numerous bench press national and world records in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). Anthony Wayne Clark (September 15, 1966, in Philippines – May 22, 2005, in Friendswood, Texas, U.S.) was an American powerlifter, holder of the world record for the reverse-grip bench press and member of the York Barbell Hall of Fame. Powerlifting career By the time Clark was 13, he was lifting 110-pound cement weights. Lars Hedlund (January 24, 1949 – June 4, 2016), was a former strongman and powerlifter from Sweden. Strongman Lars competed in three World's Strongest Man contests, finishing second at the 1979 and 1980 World's Strongest Man, and third in 1978. Lars also won Europe's Strongest Man in 1981. Doug Young (August 21, 1944 – October 7, 2005) was an American national and world powerlifting champion multiple times throughout his career while competing in the 242 lb. and 275 lb. weight classes. Doug won his third straight world championship title at the 1977 IPF world championships.
