Preseli Transmitting Station
The Preseli transmitting station (formerly spelt Presely) is a broadcasting and telecommunications facility on the eastern end of the Preseli Hills, Preseli Mountains, close to the villages of Crymych and Pentre Galar in Pembrokeshire, Wales (). It is owned and operated by Arqiva. It has a high Radio masts and towers#Steel lattice, guyed steel lattice mast. It was constructed in 1962 by the Independent Broadcasting Authority, IBA to transmit ITV Network, ITV 405-line television with transmissions commencing on Band III channel 8 from antennas at above sea level. The triangle of antenna arrays aimed beams of signal towards Pembrokeshire, another lobe was directed towards western Carmarthenshire and a northward beam covered south western Cardiganshire. The northward beam from the site also fed the transmitter at Arfon transmitting station, Arfon in North Wales. Preseli Pembrokeshire (, ; cy, Preseli Sir Benfro) was one of six Districts of Wales, local government districts of Dyfed in West Wales from 1974 to 1996. Until 1987 the name of the district was Preseli. The district took its name from the Preseli Hills. Heart South Wales is an regional radio station that broadcasts to South and West Wales from studios in Cardiff Bay. The station is owned and operated by Global Radio and forms part of the expanded Heart radio network of stations. There is no channel, past or present, named "ITV Wales and West". The Welsh Language Society ( cy, Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg, often abbreviated to Cymdeithas yr Iaith or just Cymdeithas) is a direct action pressure group in Wales campaigning for the right of Welsh people to use the Welsh language in every aspect of their lives. The current Chair of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg is Mabli Siriol. History and background The Society was established in name on 4 August 1962 at Pontarddulais in South Wales, but did not have a constitution until 18 May 1963. The formation was at least partly inspired by the annual BBC Wales Radio Lecture given on 13 February 1962 by Saunders Lewis and entitled '' Tynged yr iaith'' (The fate of the language). Historian John Davies has said that the lecture was "the catalyst" for the formation of the Welsh Language Society, and the start of a period of direct-action agitation to enhance the status of the Welsh language.
