Praefectus Annonae
The ("prefect of the provisions"), also called the ("prefect of the grain supply") was a Roman official charged with the supervision of the grain supply to the city of Rome. Under the Republic, the job was usually done by an aedile. However, in emergencies, or in times of extraordinary scarcity, someone would be elected to the office, and would take charge of supplying the entire city with provisions. Lucius Minucius Augurinus, the accuser of Spurius Maelius, was the first individual appointed to this office, serving from 439 BC. During the early 60s BC, following the sacking of the port of Ostia by pirates, Pompey held the powers of the office. Around 7 BC, the first Roman Emperor, Augustus, followed this example, and after vesting himself with these powers, specified that two former praetors should be appointed each year to carry out the functions of this office. Servius Sulpicius Similis
Servius Sulpicius Similis (died c. 125) was an eques of ancient Rome who held several imperial positions, both civil and military, under Trajan and Hadrian, culminating with ''praefectus'' or governor of Egypt from 107 to 112. His place of origin is unknown. A fragmentary inscription bearing Similis' name has been found in a cathedral in Carthage. This led Ronald Syme to comment, "An African 'patria' is not excluded". Career While a centurion, Sulpicius Similis' actions during Trajan's First Dacian War brought him to the emperor's attention. Gaius Minicius Italus
Gaius Minicius Italus was a Roman '' eques'' who flourished during the reign of the emperors Vespasian, Domitian, and Trajan. He was appointed to a series of imperial offices, both military and civil, culminating with ''praefectus'' or governor of Roman Egypt. Career We can reconstruct his career from an inscription on a bronze statue in Aquileia erected in his honor. The occasion for this statue was "that at his request Trajan had ruled that '' incolae'' (inhabitants of the city who were not citizens of it) should be liable to local obligations ('' munera'') along with the citizens." The first office listed was ''quattuorvir jure dicundo'', a municipal body of four men for the administration of justice, which allows us to conclude this home town. Claudius Athenodorus
Claudius Athenodorus was a Roman '' eques'' who flourished during the reign of the emperor Domitian. He was appointed to a series of imperial offices, including ''praefectus annonae'' for the city of Rome. Hans-Georg Pflaum noted that Athenodorus is the Greek translation of the Syrian Vaballath. This, combined with an inscription attesting that he was imperial procurator of Roman Syria during the reign of Domitian, led Pflaum to conclude Athenodorus was a native of that province. Marcus Mettius Rufus
Marcus Mettius Rufus was a Roman '' eques'' who flourished during the reign of the emperors Domitian and Trajan. He was appointed to a series of imperial offices, including ''praefectus'' or governor of Roman Egypt. Hans-Georg Pflaum first traced the rise of his family, the Mettii, identifying their origins in Petelia, a small Greek-speaking town in Bruttium, whence they emigrated to Arles when Julius Caesar settled one of their ancestors, a soldier or centurion of his Legio VI, there. Rufus' father was Marcus Mettius Modestus, procurator of Syria; he is known to have a brother, Mettius Modestus, suffect consul in 82. Two men have been identified as sons of Rufus: Gaius Trebonius Proculus Mettius Modestus, suffect consul in 103; and Marcus Mettius Rufus, who died before he could reach the consulate. Lucius Laberius Maximus
Lucius Laberius Maximus was a governor of Roman Egypt in 83 CE, and prefect of the imperial bodyguard, known as the Praetorian Guard, during the reign of Roman Emperor Domitian, in 84 CE. Prior to achieving these positions, Laberius Maximus had also successfully completed a term as ''Praefectus annonae'', or the prefect in charge of the grain supply of Rome. Maximus attained all three of the highest offices open to members of the equestrian class. Family Maximus was the son of another Lucius Laberius Maximus, who served as an aedile of Lanuvium. The name of Maximus' wife is not known; however, his son has been identified. Manius Laberius Maximus, was a significant senator and military figure during the reigns of the Emperors Domitian and Trajan. Through this son Maximus was the paternal grandfather of the rich heiress Laberia Hostilia Crispina and ancestor to the Roman Empress Bruttia Crispina. Gaius Tettius Cassianus Priscus
Gaius Tettius Africanus Cassianus Priscus was a Roman '' eques'' who held a number of appointments during the reigns of the emperor Vespasian and his sons. Pavis d'Escurac observes that Priscus is the only known ''eques'' to hold the ranks of both ''praefectus vigilum'' (commander of the ''vigiles'' or night watch), ''praefectus annonae'' (overseer of the grain supply of Rome);Pavis d'Escurac''La préfecture de l'annone, service administratif impérial d'Auguste à Constantin''(Rome: Ecole française de Rome, 1976), p. 324 Priscus was also ''praefectus'' or governor of Roman Egypt. Lucius Julius Ursus
Lucius Julius Ursus was a relative of the Flavian dynasty, who was originally one of the equites who held several imperial appointments, but afterwards was promoted to the Roman senate. He was suffect consul three times: once under Domitian and twice under Trajan. Life Ursus was the younger brother of Tiberius Julius Lupus; their father was Julius Lupus, the brother-in-law of the praetorian prefect Marcus Arrecinus Clemens and uncle of Arrecina Tertulla, the wife of the emperor Titus. This connection led to Ursus being appointed to the three top equestrian posts: ''Praefectus annonae'', or prefect of the grain supply for Rome, then praetorian prefect (81-83 AD), and governor of Roman Egypt (83-84 AD). Gaius Valerius Paulinus (eques)
Gaius Valerius Paulinus was a Roman '' eques'' who flourished during the reign of the emperors Nero, and Vespasian. He was appointed to a series of imperial offices, including ''praefectus'' or governor of Roman Egypt. Ronald Syme has strongly suggested that Paulinus is the father of the identically named Gaius Valerius Paullinus, suffect consul in 107. Valerius Paulinus first appears in history during the Year of Four Emperors while procurator or overseer of the imperial properties in Gallia Narbonensis. As Tacitus tells us, following the defeat of the Othonian forces in the Battle of Bedriacum, Fabius Valens left Italy by ship to raise troops in Gaul. He put in at Hercules Monoecus (modern Monaco) where he learned Paulinus, who was a friend of Vespasian, was blocking his path inland. Arrius Varus
Arrius Varus was a Roman soldier who rose to prominence during the Year of the Four Emperors (AD 69) as a supporter of Vespasian. Varus managed to hold two of the most senior equestrian posts, praetorian prefect and ''praefectus annonae''. What is known about him comes from the writings of the Roman historian Tacitus, who describes him as "an energetic soldier".Tacitus, ''Historiae'', iii.6 Varus first appears in the historical record as a commander of a cohors in Corbulo's army, when during the latter's campaign on the Eastern frontier Varus was assigned to escort some Armenian hostages. Gaius Poppaeus Sabinianus
The gens Poppaea was a minor plebeian family at ancient Rome. Members of this gens first appear under the early Empire, when two brothers served as consuls in AD 9. The Roman empress Poppaea Sabina was a descendant of this family, but few others achieved any prominence in the Roman state. A number of Poppaei are known from inscriptions. The name is sometimes confused with that of '' Pompeia''. Origin The consul Gaius Poppaeus Sabinus is said to have come from an undistinguished family, and to have owed his lengthy career more to his competence than his brilliance. There is little evidence of the Poppaei prior to the first century, but from inscriptions the family seems to have been concentrated in Campania. The cognomen ''Sabinus'' used by the most prominent branch of the gens suggests that they claimed Sabine ancestry. The region of Campania where the greatest number of Poppaei are found was associated with the Samnites, an Oscan-speaking people who also claimed Sabine descent. ...
