Place-d'Armes (Montreal Metro)
Place-d'Armes station is a Montreal Metro station in the borough of Ville-Marie in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is operated by the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) and serves the Orange Line. It is located in Old Montreal. The station opened on October 14, 1966, as part of the original network of the Metro. It was briefly the terminus of the Orange Line until Square-Victoria-OACI station opened four months later, quickly followed by Bonaventure station, the planned terminus. Overview The station, designed by Janusz Warunkiewicz, is a normal side platform station, built in open cut due to the presence of weak Utica shale in the surrounding rock. Its mezzanine, with fare barriers at either side, is located directly under the Palais des congrès de Montréal; one end gives direct access to the Palais, while the other opens outside, near Chinatown. Saint Urbain Street
Saint Urbain Street (french: rue Saint-Urbain) is a major one-way street located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The original, southernmost section of the street was built by Urbain Tessier (c. 1624–1689), a farmer and carpenter who settled in the area. The name also makes reference to Saint Urbain. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the street, now stretching northward, was home to several of Montreal's prominent British and French merchants, notably the explorer Alexander Henry the elder. By the turn of the 20th century, sections of the street were industrialised and became run down, and were settled by Jews, predominantly from Eastern Europe. Writer Mordecai Richler immortalised the Mile End section as a centre of the Jewish community in Montreal, and he documented the life there in novels such as '' St. Urbain's Horseman''. A turnstile (also called a turnpike, gateline, baffle gate, automated gate, turn gate in some regions) is a form of gate which allows one person to pass at a time. 500 Place D'Armes
500 Place d'Armes is an International style building on the historic Place d'Armes square in Old Montreal quarter of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Completed in 1968 as the Banque Canadienne Nationale tower, it is Montreal's 17th tallest building, at 133 m (435 ft), 32 storeys. It was designed by Montreal architects Pierre Boulva and Jacques David, whose other prominent Montreal projects included the Palais de justice de Montréal, Théâtre Maisonneuve, the Dow Planetarium and the Place-des-Arts, Atwater and Lucien-L'Allier metro stations. When it was built in the late 60s, this building was the subject of heated talk. Overview Designed by David, Boulva, et Cleve, it is a normal side platform station built in open cut under boul. De Maisonneuve, with two ticket halls joined by corridors that surround and overlook the platforms. The eastern mezzanine includes staircases with one-way exit-only turnstiles. The station is joined by underground city to Place des Arts and Université du Québec à Montréal, and has additional four street-level exits. Complexe Guy-Favreau is a twelve-storey building complex containing Canadian government offices built in 1984. It is located at 200 René Lévesque Boulevard in Ville-Marie, Montréal and extends over a six-acre plot of land, formerly part of the Montreal Chinatown. The complex is named after Guy Favreau, a former MP, federal cabinet minister and briefly Quebec Superior Court Justice. The building complex came about as a joint venture between the federal government, who served as the head of the project, as well as private businesses, the City of Montreal, and the Desjardins Group. The multifunctional complex is part of the Montreal underground city network and contains various Canadian governmental offices, rental properties, a housing cooperative, commercial units, a daycare facility, and a small park at its center. Paul de Chomedey, sieur de Maisonneuve (15 February 1612 9 September 1676) was a French military officer and the founder of Fort Ville-Marie (modern day Montreal) in New France (Province of Quebec, Canada). Early life Maisonneuve was born into the aristocracy in Neuville-sur-Vannes in Champagne, France. He was the son of Louis de Chomedey, seigneur of Chavane, Germenoy-en-Brie, and his second wife Marie de Thomelin, the daughter of Jean de Thomelin, a king's counsellor and a treasurer of France in the generality of Champagne, and of Ambroise d’Aulquoy. Paul de Chomedey grew up in the manor-house at Neuville-sur-Vanne, not far from the Maisonneuve fief, which his father acquired in 1614. He had two sisters and one brother. He began his military career at 13 in Holland, where he also learned to play the lute. He had a successful career in which he was noted for his ability and his honesty.
