Piedmont, Alabama
Piedmont is a city in Calhoun County, Alabama, Calhoun and Cherokee County, Alabama, Cherokee counties in the U.S. state of Alabama. The population was 4,400 at the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census. It is included in the Anniston, Alabama, Anniston-Oxford, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is approximately one and a half hours west of Atlanta, Georgia via US Hwy 278, one and a half hours northeast of Birmingham, 20 minutes north of Anniston, Alabama via AL-21, and 25 minutes east of Gadsden, Alabama via US Hwy 278. The campus of Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama is approximately ten miles south of Piedmont via AL-21. The city is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains chain and is surrounded by mountains on the city's southern and eastern sides. WPID
WPID (1280 AM, "E-Z 1280") was a radio station licensed to serve Piedmont, Alabama, United States. The station, established in 1953, was owned by Piedmont Radio Company. Programming WPID broadcast an adult contemporary music format. Along with its usual music programming, WPID was the Piedmont affiliate of the Fox News Radio network, Dick Bartley's ''Rock'n'Roll's Greatest Hits'', Dick Bartley's ''American Gold'', and '' American Top 20 with Casey Kasem''. Each Friday night in high school football season, WPID broadcast each Piedmont High School football game live. Other sporting events that WPID carried included opening day baseball for the Piedmont Parks and Recreation Department and occasional high school basketball games. Cheaha Mountain
Cheaha Mountain , often called Mount Cheaha, is the highest natural point in the U.S. state of Alabama. It is located a few miles northwest of the town of Delta in Cheaha State Park, which offers a lodge, a restaurant, and other amenities. Description The highest point is marked with a USGS benchmark in front of Bunker Tower, a stone Civilian Conservation Corps building with an observation deck on top. The CCC also constructed a road to Cheaha, but the road has been closed for years. The old road is known as CC Road and contains interesting ruins. Near the peak is Bald Rock, which was recently improved with a wheelchair-accessible wooden walkway that provides an impressive overlook of the surrounding region. Pinhoti National Recreation Trail
The Pinhoti Trail is a Southern Appalachian Mountains long-distance trail, in length, located in the United States within the states of Alabama and Georgia. The trail's southern terminus is on Flagg Mountain, near Weogufka, Alabama, the southernmost peak in the state that rises over . (The mountain is often called the southernmost Appalachian peak, though by most geological reckonings, the actual Appalachian range ends somewhat farther north in Alabama.) Chief Ladiga Trail
The Chief Ladiga Trail is a rail trail in Alabama that stretches for from Anniston to the Alabama-Georgia state line. It is the state's first rail trail project. History Trail background The Chief Ladiga is on the same rail corridor as the Silver Comet Trail in Georgia as far as Piedmont, Alabama. From there it parallels an abandoned Southern Railway line for a few miles west of town until it leaves the old Seaboard rail line, heading south on the Norfolk Southern Railway route until the trail ends just north of Anniston. In 2008, the Ladiga and Silver Comet trail were connected. A new gateway marks the connecting point at the state line. Now that the Chief Ladiga and the Silver Comet trails are connected, there is a paved corridor for non-motorized travel from just west of Atlanta, Georgia to Anniston, making it the 2nd longest paved trail in the U.S (the longest being the Paul Bunyan State Trail in Minnesota).
