Peter Gray (historian)
Peter Gray (born 1965) is Professor of Modern Irish History at Queen's University Belfast. He specializes in the history of British-Irish relations in the 19th century, particularly the Great Irish Famine. He is a member of the International Network of Irish Famine Studies, and a member of the Irish Association of Professional Historians. Gray was Head of the School of History and Anthropology and Professor of Modern Irish History at Queen's University Belfast from 2010 to 2015. In 2015 Gray was an Eaton Visitor Fellow at the University of New Brunswick, researching the impact of the Great Famine on New Brunswick. Great Irish Famine
The Great Famine ( ga, an Gorta Mór ), also known within Ireland as the Great Hunger or simply the Famine and outside Ireland as the Irish Potato Famine, was a period of starvation and disease in Ireland from 1845 to 1852 that constituted a historical social crisis which subsequently had a major impact on Irish society and history as a whole. With the most severely affected areas in the west and south of Ireland, where the Irish language was dominant, the period was contemporaneously known in Irish as , literally translated as "the bad life" (and loosely translated as "the hard times").
