People's Liberation Army General Armaments Department
People's Liberation Army General Armaments Department (GAD; ) was founded in April 1998 and is in charge of equipping and arming the People's Liberation Army, as well as overseeing and improving military technology. It is one of the four "general departments" that fall under the Central Military Commission. Various space launch sites across the country also fall under its jurisdiction. The department was disbanded in January 2016 and the new agency, Equipment Development Department of the Central Military Commission is founded. People's Liberation Army
The People's Liberation Army (PLA) is the principal military force of the People's Republic of China and the armed wing of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The PLA consists of five service branches: the Ground Force, Navy, Air Force, Rocket Force, and Strategic Support Force. It is under the leadership of the Central Military Commission (CMC) with its chairman as commander-in-chief. The PLA can trace its origins during the Republican Era to the left-wing units of the National Revolutionary Army (NRA) of the Kuomintang (KMT) when they broke away on 1 August 1927 in an uprising against the nationalist government as the Chinese Red Army before being reintegrated into the NRA as units of New Fourth Army and Eighth Route Army during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The Central Military Commission (CMC) is the highest national defense organization in the People's Republic of China. It operates within the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) under the name "Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China", and as the military branch of the central government under the name "Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China". The Equipment Development Department of the Central Military Commission () is the chief organ under the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China. It was founded on January 11, 2016, under Xi Jinping's military reforms. The department continues to oversee and improve military technology. Gen. Zhang Youxia served as the first director. Zhang Youxia
Zhang Youxia (; born July 1950) is a general in the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China and currently the second-ranked Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Central Military Commission (CMC). He previously served as Head of the CMC Equipment Development Department, and its predecessor, the PLA General Armaments Department, from 2012 to 2017. He is the son of General Zhang Zongxun. He is a veteran of the 1979 Sino-Vietnamese War and one of the few serving generals in China with war experience. Biography Zhang was born and raised in Beijing, but traces his ancestry to Yantou Village, Weinan, Shaanxi Province. Zhang Yulin
Zhang Yulin (; born January 1958) is an Astronautics, astronautic engineer and lieutenant general of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China. He has been Deputy Director of the PLA General Armaments Department since 2011, and previously served as the President of the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT), and Commander of the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. Biography In 1958, Zhang was born in Qianyang County, Shaanxi Province. In 1978 Zhang entered NUDT, majoring in Liquid fuels, liquid rocket engine technology. Zhang graduated BE and ME from NUDT. Wang Hongyao (; born November 1951) is a retired general of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA). He served as Political Commissar of the PLA General Armaments Department, and its successor organization, the Equipment Development Department of the Central Military Commission, from 2011 to 2017. Biography Wang Hongyao was born in November 1951 in Jining, Shandong Province. He holds a graduate degree from the PLA National Defence University.
