History In July 2012 Franciscu Sedda and Ornella Demuru, husband and wife, left Project Republic of Sardinia (ProgReS), a party they were instrumental to launch, over disagreements with the new party leadership and the rise of Michela Murgia, a writer who was headed to become the party's candidate in the 2014 regional election. In July 2013 Sedda launched the PdS along with Paolo Maninchedda, a splinter from the Sardinian Action Party (PSd'Az). At the first party congress Sedda declared: "Let's start to think and act as a state and a nation, and self-determination will come, maybe not today, but much sooner than we think". Several political parties operate in Sardinia. No party has ever had the chance of gaining power alone and thus parties must work with each other to form coalition governments. The political parties are currently organized mainly in two political coalitions at the regional level: once centred on the Sardinian Action Party and Lega Sardegna, the other around Democratic Party. Because of their ideological and political factionalism, the Sardinian nationalist parties have played a marginal role in the electoral scene. Independence Republic of Sardinia ( sc, Indipendèntzia Repùbrica de Sardigna, iRS) was a Sardist, left-wing nationalist and social-democratic and non-violent separatist political party in Sardinia. The party, whose long-time leader is Gavino Sale, supports the establishment of a "Republic of Sardinia" and its independence from Italy. Red Moors
Red Moors ( it, Rossomori, RM) is a regionalist (separatist), social-democratic political party in Sardinia. The party was founded in 2009 as a left-wing split from the Sardinian Action Party (Psd'Az), after the Psd'Az had signed an electoral pact with The People of Freedom, the main centre-right party in Italy. In the 2009 regional election the RM won 2.5% of the vote, despite not being on the ballot in three provincial constituencies out of eight, and one regional councillor, Claudia Zuncheddu. The list did better in the province of Sassari (4.2%) and the province of Nuoro (3.3%). Sardinian Action Party
The Sardinian Action Party ( sc, Partidu Sardu, it, Partito Sardo d'Azione, PSd'Az or PSdA) is a Sardinian nationalist, regionalist and separatist political party in Sardinia. While being traditionally part of the Sardinian centre-left, the party has also sided with the centre-right coalition and, more recently, with the League. The PSd'Az is one of the oldest stateless nationalist parties active in Europe that promotes autonomy towards the ideal of independence. As such, the party was a founding member of the European Free Alliance in 1984, but was expelled in 2020 because of its alliance with the League. 2014 Sardinian Regional Election
The Sardinian regional election of 2014 took place on 16 February 2014. Francesco Pigliaru of the Democratic Party defeated incumbent Ugo Cappellacci of Forza Italia. The combined score of the highly fragmented Sardist parties was 26%. The Five Star Movement did not take part to the election, after Beppe Grillo refused to concede the use of his party's symbol. The notorious novelist Michela Murgia, who received more than the 10% of votes, wasn't elected because of the new high electoral threshold. New electoral system In 2013 Sardinian electoral law was changed once again. While the President of Sardinia and the first leader of the opposition are still elected at-large, 58 councillors, instead of 64 as it was before, are elected by party lists under a form of semi-proportional representation. Michela Murgia
Michela Murgia (born 3 June 1972) is an Italian novelist, playwright and radio personality. She is a winner of the Premio Campiello and the Mondello International Literary Prize. Biography Michela Murgia was born in Cabras, Sardinia on 3 June 1972. At the age of 18, she was taken in by her adoptive family as a ''filla de anima'', a soul-child, a traditional Sardinian adoption. In contrast to the usual age of between 10 and 14 years, Murgia's adoption was delayed because of her natural father's opposition. Murgia attended the Lorenzo Mossa Oristano institute for technical studies, and then joined the Institute of Religious Studies of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Oristano to study theology. Murgia taught religious studies at middle and grammar schools in Oristano for six years but never finished her studies. Project Republic of Sardinia ( sc, Progetu Repùblica de Sardigna, ProgReS) is a separatist political party in Sardinia, founded in January 2011 following a split from Independence Republic of Sardinia (iRS). The party's current secretary is Luigi Todde, while Adriano Sollai serve as its presidents. Separatism
Separatism is the advocacy of cultural, ethnic, tribal, religious, racial, governmental or gender separation from the larger group. As with secession, separatism conventionally refers to full political separation. Groups simply seeking greater autonomy are not separatist as such.
