Providensky District (; Chukchi language, Chukchi: , ''Urèlḳujym rajon''; Yupik languages, Yupik: Уӷрилӄуйым район) is an administrativeLaw #33-OZ and municipalLaw #45-OZ district (raion), one of the administrative divisions of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, six in Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Russia. It is located in the northeast of the autonomous okrug, in the southern half of the Chukchi Peninsula with a northwest extension reaching almost to the Kolyuchinskaya Bay on the Arctic. It borders with Chukotsky District in the north, the Bering Sea in the east and south, and with Iultinsky District in the west. The area of the district is . Novoye Chaplino
Novoye Chaplino (, Siberian Yupik: ''Ungaziq'') is a village ('' selo'') in Providensky District of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, in the Far Eastern Federal District of Russia. Population: Municipally, Novoye Chaplino is subordinated to Providensky Municipal District. In 2010, a law was passed abolishing the municipal rural settlement of Novoye Chaplino. The village continues to exist, but is now municipally part of Providenia Urban Settlement. History Origins The village was founded in 1960,Strogoff p.135 although some sources state that it was founded in 1958 as a result of the merging of several nearby coastal villages into one. Arakamchechen Island (; Eskimo–Aleut languages, Eskimo–Aleut: ''Kigini'') is an island in the Bering Sea. Geography Arakamchechen lies north of Cape Chaplino, close to the coast of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Chukotka. It is separated from the continental shore by an 8 km wide sound. This island is inhabited; the main settlement is Yanrakynnot village. Arakamchechen Island is 32 km long and has a maximum width of 21 km. It has a mountainous interior. South of it lies Yttygran Island and west of it Penkigney Bay. There is a 5 km wide sound between the two islands. Nunligran (; , ''Nunlygran'') is a village ('' selo'') in Providensky Municipal District of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, in the Far Eastern Federal District of Russia. Population: Municipally, Nunligran is subordinated to Chukotsky Municipal District and incorporated as Nunligran Rural Settlement. Geography The settlement, about 180 km from Provideniya is a Chukchi village that replaced a Yupik village, indeed the name is derived from a combination of the two languages: "Nunalyk", the Yupik for "having a village" and "Ran", the Chukchi word for "Dwelling". It is not clear whether the Chukchi gradually became the dominant race in the village or whether they forced the Yupik out. Yaranga
A Yaranga ( Chukchi: ) is a tent-like traditional mobile home of some nomadic Northern indigenous peoples of Russia, such as Chukchi and Siberian Yupik. A Yaranga is a cone-shaped or rounded reindeer-hide tent. It is built of a light wooden frame covered with reindeer skins or canvas sewn together. The word ''yaranga'' comes from the Chukchi word for house: ''jaraŋə'' (Cyrillic: яраӈы). In Russian use, the terms chum, yurt and yaranga may be used interchangeably. Medvezhye (), also known as Mezhgornoye (), is a lake in Providensky District, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Russian Federation.Google Earth There are no permanent settlements on the shores of the lake. The nearest inhabited place is Enmelen, located to the southeast. Geography Medvezhye is located in the Chukotka Peninsula, east of Kresta Bay, close to the Gulf of Anadyr of the Bering Sea. It is a long and narrow lake that lies at the southeastern end of the Chukotka Mountains. The lake fills a valley oriented from north to south bound by mountains on either side.
