Praxis: The Artists' Union of Ireland is an Irish trade union for professional artists. It affiliated to SIPTU in 2024.PRAXIS: THE ARTISTS’ UNION OF IRELAND: Election Information for Candidates (2024)' History Praxis was founded in its original form during 2020, with approximately 100 founder members; it was launched publicly as a trade union in March 2021. According to the ''Business Post'', its aims are "to unite artists, increase recognition of their role in Irish society and ensure better pay and conditions." Its first initiative was to campaign against the Arts Council’s existing funding application process. At the time of its launch, a Praxis spokesperson stated that Arts Council funding applications can last for several months, and that many of these applications are unsuccessful. The Phoenix (magazine)
''The Phoenix'' is an Irish left-wing political and current affairs magazine, established in 1983 by John Mulcahy. Inspired by the British magazine ''Private Eye'', the magazine has been edited by Paddy Prendeville since 1984. The publication is generally fortnightly, with a larger annual issue each December. ''The Phoenix'' "produces a fortnightly diet, humour, financial analysis, and news with an insider slant from the worlds of security, politics, media, arts, and law." History and operations The magazine was launched in January 1983. SIPTU
SIPTU (; ''Services, Industrial, Professional and Technical Union''; ) is Ireland's largest trade union, with around 200,000 members. Most of these members are in the Republic of Ireland, although the union does have a Northern Ireland District Committee. Its head office, Liberty Hall, is in Dublin, and the union has five industrial divisions, three in the private sector and two in the public sector. SIPTU is affiliated to the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. History The Union has its roots in two separate trade unions both founded by the trade union leader and socialist activist James Larkin; the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union and the Federated Workers' Union of Ireland. The two unions merged in 1990 to create SIPTU. The merge was first proposed in the 1950s, and almost happened in 1969. The ''Business Post'' (formerly ''The Sunday Business Post'') is a Sunday newspaper distributed nationally in Ireland and an online publication. It is focused mainly on business and financial issues in Ireland. Founding to Irish financial crisis ''The Sunday Business Post'' was co-founded by four people: the economist and editor Damien Kiberd, Aileen O'Toole (former editor of '' Business & Finance''), Frank Fitzgibbon (editor of ''The Sunday Times'' Ireland) and James Morrissey (spokesperson for Denis O'Brien). 2008 Financial Crisis
The 2008 financial crisis, also known as the global financial crisis (GFC), was a major worldwide financial crisis centered in the United States. The causes of the 2008 crisis included excessive speculation on housing values by both homeowners and financial institutions that led to the 2000s United States housing bubble, exacerbated by predatory lending for subprime mortgages and deficiencies in regulation. Cash out refinancings had fueled an increase in consumption that could no longer be sustained when home prices declined. The first phase of the crisis was the subprime mortgage crisis, which began in early 2007, as mortgage-backed securities (MBS) tied to U.S. real estate, and a vast web of Derivative (finance), derivatives linked to those MBS, collapsed in value. Visual Artists Ireland (VAI, Irish: ''Ealaíontóirí Radharcacha Éire'') is an advocacy, support, publishing, and information organisation representing professional visual artists on the island of Ireland. History Founded in 1980 as the Sculptors’ Society of Ireland, the name was changed in 2005 as they began to include visual artists of all disciplines. Their current slogan describes VAI as "The Representative Body for Visual Artists in Ireland supporting artists at all stages of their careers". Noel Kelly has been the CEO/Director of the non-profit since 2007.
